Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has discussed potential dates for a visit to Ukraine with US President Donald Trump’s representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The detailed and constructive talks follow previous US diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that he held a detailed and constructive phone call with representatives of US President Donald Trump, specifically naming Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, according to a post on Zelenskyy’s official Telegram channel.
The two sides are currently discussing potential dates for a visit to Ukraine, according to Zelenskyy’s statement. He added that teams from both sides will remain in continuous contact to draft an agenda and establish a timeline for future communication between the parties.
Diplomatic Efforts and Previous Regional Contacts
In late July, US President Donald Trump stated in an interview with the Financial Times that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would travel to Kyiv soon as part of broader efforts to settle the crisis in Ukraine. Initial media reports suggested the American envoys originally intended to visit Kyiv around Ukraine’s independence day on August 24, though that trip did not take place.
If completed, the upcoming trip will mark the first visit by Witkoff and Kushner to Kyiv since they were assigned to handle negotiation files. Their previous diplomatic travel was limited to Moscow and other regional capitals.
Discussions in Moscow and Russian Stance
Witkoff and Kushner last traveled to Moscow in January 2026. During that visit, the American envoys met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a draft peace agreement aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov subsequently announced that President Putin remains ready to welcome Trump’s envoys back to Moscow, though Russian officials indicated that the viability of such meetings depends heavily on the nature of the proposals the envoys bring to the Kremlin.
