Sid Meier’s Civilization VII Announces First Expansion Earthrise

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is expanding with its first major paid expansion, Earthrise, and a free 2027 update introducing the Atomic Age, publisher announcements revealed at PAX West. Update 1.5.0 arrives later this month with the long-awaited True Start Location Earth map and quality-of-life enhancements.

Strategy players are getting a massive injection of new historical eras, environmental mechanics, and globe-spanning management tools. During a special presentation at PAX West 2026 celebrating the franchise’s 35th anniversary, 2K Games and Firaxis Games pulled back the curtain on a robust roadmap for Sid Meier’s Civilization VII.

Update 1.5.0 Brings True Start Location Earth Map This Month

Before the major 2027 content drops arrive, players will experience Update 1.5.0 later this month. Headlining the patch is the community-requested True Start Location: Earth map. This addition generates real-world landmasses, resources, and geographic features, letting civilizations spawn in their authentic historical regions.

Map loading and generation speeds have been accelerated, while resource placement is designed to feel more varied across campaigns. The update also integrates the Voronoi map generation algorithm into the Terra Incognita and Shuffle map types, giving them a more natural and varied look.

Arc of Tomorrow Free Update Delivers the Atomic Age in 2027

Looking further ahead, the major free update titled Arc of Tomorrow will launch in 2027. It introduces an entirely new fourth Age spanning roughly from the 1950s through the near future or 2050s, complete with sweeping urban city architecture, updated tech and civic trees, new Triumphs, and social policies.

Players can register for an opportunity to playtest this content through the Firaxis Feature Workshop during initial playtesting rounds later this year. The update brings back leader Gandhi alongside a fresh roster of period-specific civilizations. Empire management also deepens with tools allowing players to recognize the independence of their settlements and release them as city-states to manage empire size and loyalty.

Other additions in the free update include Great Works of Film—where film crews hunt for genre-specific locations—and manufactured goods recipes that combine specific commodities to generate powerful new resources like Enriched Uranium. Nuclear warfare receives an overhaul as well, introducing new offensive and defensive units alongside a fresh mechanical twist on mutually assured destruction.
