Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day reached $900 million at the domestic box office in just 36 days, breaking the speed record set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Destin Daniel Cretton’s blockbuster is now closing in on the all-time North American record as Labor Day weekend box office numbers roll in.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Shatters Box Office Speed Records
Tom Holland’s latest outing as the web-slinger has officially rewritten box office history. Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed the $900 million mark domestically on September 5, doing so in a blistering 36 days. That milestone shatters the previous benchmark held by Disney and Lucasfilm’s 2015 release Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which required 50 days to reach the same territory. The Marvel-Sony tentpole is projected to make $22 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend, pushing its domestic total to $922 million.
The film closed out its fifth week with $30.4 million, bringing its running domestic cume through Thursday to $899.7 million before clearing the threshold on Friday with an additional $3.9 million. The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed crowdpleaser is expected to do around $18M for the Friday-Monday stretch, per sources. That trajectory leaves it on a direct path to cross $936 million and pass Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.6M) as the highest-grossing domestic film of all time. Forbes contributor Tim Lammers had flagged the milestone as imminent as of August 31, noting the film had reached $891.8 million in its 31st day of release after a fourth consecutive weekend atop the domestic chart. The opening weekend alone, $360.1 million from 4,487 North American theaters, broke the record previously held by Avengers: Endgame, which had opened to $357.1 million in 2019.
Chasing Avengers: Endgame and Global Milestones
Domestically, the film has already cleared past major historical juggernauts. Spider-Man: Brand New Day surpassed the lifetime total of Avengers: Endgame at the domestic box office, where the 2019 box-office juggernaut earned $858,373,000 domestically. Brand New Day needed just $3.47 million to surpass Avengers: Endgame, achieving the milestone by the end of its fourth Monday after wrapping its fourth Sunday with a $12.2 million collection, a 27.5% dip from its $16.9 million Saturday total. At the same point in its run, Avengers: Endgame was $92 million behind where Brand New Day now stands, despite the two films starting within $3 million of each other after their opening weekends.
On a global scale, the numbers are equally staggering. The picture crossed the $2 billion mark worldwide just 17 days into its run, making it only the eighth movie in history to reach that threshold. Its worldwide gross now sits at roughly $2.332 billion, per Forbes, placing it fourth on the all-time global chart just behind Avatar: The Way of Water. Avengers: Endgame had concluded its worldwide run with $2.79 billion at the box office.
Labor Day Box Office Competition and New Releases
Two action flicks, Paramount’s “By Any Means” and A24’s “Onslaught,” arrived in theaters on Friday, but neither could dethrone Spider-Man: Brand New Day,
which remains No. 1 in its sixth weekend in theaters. Paramount began previews Thursday for the Elegance Bratton-directed R-rated action thriller By Any Means, starring Mark Wahlberg and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. It did $725,000 at 2,350 theaters. The 1960s-set period title, which was financed by Hammerstone for $29M, is a straight distribution deal for the Melrose Avenue lot in its efforts under the David Ellison administration to provide more movies to cinemas. By Any Means performed the best of the two newcomers, earning $2.7 million domestically on Friday to finish fourth behind “Spider-Man,” “The Odyssey” and Coyote vs. Acme.
Through the long weekend, the ’60s thriller is expected to make $8.5 million (with trade outlooks ranging from $6M-$8M).
By Any Means, produced by Thunder Road, is inspired by a true story and follows a young Black FBI agent (Abdul-Mateen) who is sent into 1960s Mississippi to investigate a wave of brutal killings targeting civil rights leaders. Forced to work alongside notorious mafia hitman Greg Scarpa (Wahlberg), he finds himself pulled into a deadly hunt where justice and vengeance begin to blur. Nicole Beharie, Josh Lucas, LisaGay Hamilton and LaChanze also star, with a screenplay by Sascha Penn.
Meanwhile, “Onslaught” is failing to connect after only grossing $770,000 on Friday; it’s on pace to pull in just $2.3 million by Monday. Adria Arjona leads the action movie as Celeste, an army sniper who must protect her daughter from a squad of genetically engineered super soldiers. Other cast members include Dan Stevens, Eric Wareheim, Reginald VelJohnson, Michael Biehn, Blake Kennedy and Alex Pereira. Adam Wingard directs the film with a script by Simon Barrett. Another July holdover, Universal’s “The Odyssey,” grossed $3 million on Friday, vaulting it to second place. Through Monday, it should pull in $16.4 million, following its milestone crossing of $1B at the international box office.
