South Africans can explore most national parks for free during the 21st annual SA National Parks Week, running from September 7 to 13, 2026. While most participating reserves open their gates across the full seven days, select locations enforce weekday-only schedules, and several sites remain excluded from the initiative.
The annual campaign invites residents and visitors to swap screens and traffic for trails, wildlife, and open country. Established in 2006, the flagship awareness initiative draws hundreds of thousands of day visitors each year, recording more than 105,000 attendees during the 2025 campaign alone, according to the South African Government News Agency.
SANParks states that the initiative aims to help South Africans experience and value their natural heritage. The campaign has run since 2006 and serves as one of SANParks’ flagship public awareness initiatives, helping to strengthen public appreciation of South Africa’s national parks and their vital role in conservation.
Park Schedules and Weekday-Only Exceptions for 2026
While the majority of participating parks welcome visitors throughout the entire seven-day window from September 7 to September 13, 2026, three prominent locations operate on restricted weekday timelines. Kruger National Park, West Coast National Park, and Augrabies Falls National Park offer free day access strictly from Monday, September 7, to Friday, September 11, 2026, excluding the weekend.
Visitors must present valid identification at the gates to qualify for the waiver. Adults are required to show a valid South African ID, while children under 18 must provide valid identification, such as a birth certificate.

Regional Landscapes Included in the Free Access Programme
The free entry covers day access across diverse regional ecosystems, allowing travelers to choose from mountain ranges, coastal reserves, and arid national parks. In the Cape region, participating sites include Agulhas, Bontebok, Table Mountain, and Tankwa Karoo national parks, alongside the West Coast reserve during its weekday window.
The Frontier Region brings Addo Elephant, Camdeboo, Karoo, and Mountain Zebra into the programme. Visitors can utilize Addo and Mountain Zebra for self-drive wildlife viewing, explore Camdeboo’s Valley of Desolation, or walk Karoo’s fossil trail. Meanwhile, the Garden Route National Park features Wilderness, Knysna, and Tsitsikamma, where guests can cross the Storms River Mouth suspension bridge. Wilderness also provides six canoes a day free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Northern Region offers Golden Gate Highlands, Mapungubwe, and Marakele. Visitors can hike, drive, and watch wildlife in these areas. Mapungubwe also offers views of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers, where three countries meet, though certain attractions like Mapungubwe Hill still carry fees. The Arid Region includes Kgalagadi, Mokala, and |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park for the full week, alongside Augrabies until September 11, allowing visitors to hike, birdwatch, picnic, and take self-guided drives.
Excluded Attractions and Rules at Table Mountain
Not all national parks and tourist facilities participate in the programme. Namaqua National Park is entirely excluded from the free entry week.
In addition, specific sections of Table Mountain National Park remain outside the initiative. Day visitors cannot access the Boulders Penguin Colony Section or the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway without paying standard admission and ticket fees. Accommodation, guided activities, game drives, and other paid facilities across all parks remain chargeable.
