The Unfinished Business of the Witwatersrand Goldfields
The migrant labor system that built South Africa’s gold economy functioned as a mechanism for moving value in a single direction, according to reporting by Allafrica. The system drew workers into the Witwatersrand goldfields from the Eastern Cape, Lesotho, Mozambique, Malawi, and Zimbabwe, utilizing their working years underground before sending them home when their health failed.
Wages departed the mining regions as remittances, while silica dust remained trapped in the workers’ chests. Meanwhile, the compensation owed to these miners stayed stranded across international borders, leaving a critical gap in the goldfields’ history.
The 2019 Settlement and the Tshiamiso Trust
A major shift occurred six years ago when a class-action settlement involving six gold mining companies established the Tshiamiso Trust, backed by roughly R5-billion designated to pay out silicosis and tuberculosis claims, according to Allafrica.
By February 2026, the Trust had disbursed about R2.5-billion across six distinct countries. While this milestone marks the halfway point of both the allocated financial resources and the timeframe designated for spending them, the human reality on the ground tells a different story.
Reaching the Half-Million Claimants
Despite the distribution of billions of rands, the progress regarding individual beneficiaries lags far behind the financial timeline. Advocates estimate that approximately 500,000 potential claimants are still waiting for resolution.
Out of that vast pool of potential recipients, only about 23,000 individuals have received payouts, underscoring the severe logistical and administrative hurdles involved in delivering justice to aging miners and their grieving families across multiple nations, as detailed by Allafrica.
