Irish Open Day Two: McIlroy, Lowry and McKibbin ready for second round at Doonbeg

Rory McIlroy completed a grueling six-hour opening round at the Amgen Irish Open, sitting four shots behind leader Joaquin Niemann at Trump International Golf Links and Hotel in Doonbeg. Strong winds and a single-tee start caused massive delays, leaving Shane Lowry two strokes off the top after a solid Thursday.

Six-Hour Marathon Stalls the Field at Doonbeg

Golfers faced delays during the opening round of the Amgen Irish Open as a combination of brisk coastal winds and a single-tee start stretched rounds past the six-hour mark. Rory McIlroy stepped off the course six hours and six minutes after teeing off, signing for a one-under par 69 that he called the longest round of his professional career. Twenty-one players failed to complete their opening rounds before darkness fell, with Ireland’s Liam Nolan among those forced to return on Friday morning to finish the final five holes.

Tournament director Miguel Viador pointed to logistical hurdles that left officials powerless to speed up play. There’s no space out on the golf course, Viador explained to the press regarding the decision to use a single-tee start. There’s nothing we can do. We can’t really time players because there’s no space for us to do anything. The morning wave hit its first major snag when South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen required a 20-minute ruling on the fourth hole, setting off a traffic jam that rippled through the entire field.

Joaquin Niemann Seizes the Lead as Weather Wreaks Havoc

While players battled mounting frustration on packed tee boxes, Chile’s Joaquin Niemann mastered the conditions to post a five-under par 65, claiming the overnight lead. Niemann capitalized on downwind par-fives and strung together four successive birdies starting on the 14th hole, putting himself squarely in contention for a $30,000 (£22,000) bonus awarded for the lowest round of the week.

Gusts reaching up to 35 mph wreaked havoc on the exposed layout, causing balls to oscillate on the greens. French golfer Frederic Lacroix watched helplessly as the wind blew his ball entirely off the putting surface at the 13th hole, though he was permitted to replace it after having already marked its position. Other contenders grew visibly agitated; Jon Rahm let out an audible outburst on the fifth hole after the wind diverted a birdie putt past the cup, while Sergio Garcia shrugged in theatrical annoyance before sinking a par putt on the eighth.

Shane Lowry and Tom McKibbin Lead the Home Challenge

Shane Lowry provided the brightest spot for the home crowd, finishing his opening round two shots off the lead at three under par. The 39-year-old, who captured the tournament as an amateur in 2009, executed his strategy precisely on the front nine before grinding out crucial pars on the inward stretch.

“Look, you knew going out that you needed to make some birdies early on on those par fivess that were downwind. I felt like I did that.”

Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin matched that ambition, carding a two-under par round alongside European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald. The 23-year-old birdied three of his first four holes, leaning on his past appearances at the national open to navigate the brutal setup. I’m definitely a better player now, McKibbin stated after his round. Especially in these conditions, I think if I was to come here five years ago I would have struggled a lot and probably not sort of embraced the challenge that it was today.

Rory McIlroy Refuses to Count Himself Out After Bunker Trouble

McIlroy’s quest for a repeat title after his victory at the K Club last year hit a speed bump on the back nine. Having turned in 34 strokes, the world number two found a fairway bunker on the 13th hole, where an aggressive attempt to extract the ball backfired into a double bogey. He quickly bounced back with a birdie on the 15th, but missed late opportunities to climb further up the leaderboard.

“After making the double bogey on 13 I was just trying to get those two shots back by the end of the day. Didn’t quite do that, but I think finishing under par for the day was a reasonable effort.”

With the opening round concluding under fading light, players missing the cut-off will return to Trump International Golf Links and Hotel on Friday morning to resume play ahead of the second round.
