As the Russia-Ukraine war approaches the four-and-a-half-year mark, heavy air exchanges have killed at least 17 people across both countries. Russian strikes hit railway and shopping infrastructure in Ukraine, while Ukrainian drone attacks targeted industrial and oil sites in Russian regions, prompting warnings of retaliatory escalation.
The weekend exchanges pushed civilian casualties higher following a deadly assault in Kryvyi Rih. Oleksandr Hanzha, the governor of Dnipropetrovsk, confirmed that the death toll from a Friday drone attack on the Sunny Gallery shopping complex in Kryvyi Rih had risen to 16, with more than 130 wounded, including 22 children. Al Jazeera reported that the assault began at 4:30 in the afternoon when the mall is typically crowded, with a second wave following just 30 minutes later, with rescue workers from nearby regions called in to help.
Cross-Border Strikes Target Energy and Logistics Infrastructure
Beyond the front lines, both nations stepped up long-range drone campaigns aiming to cripple each other’s economic infrastructure. Ukrainian military officials reported a strike on an oil refinery in the Russian city of Novokuibyshevsk in the Samara region, causing a fire. Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, governor of Russia’s Samara region, said in a post on Telegram that an elderly woman had been killed in a strike on the city, which he said caused damage to industrial facilities.
The strikes also hit retail logistics inside Russia. Ozon, Russia’s second-largest online retailer, said in a statement on Telegram that work at its Samara region logistics centre in the town of Chapayevsk had been halted after the strike, which it said caused injuries. The attack is the first on Ozon following weeks of drone strikes on its larger rival Wildberries, which Ukraine has cast as part of a wider campaign against economic infrastructure underpinning the Russian war in Ukraine.
Elsewhere, regional officials reported casualties across several Russian border and occupied territories. Three people, including two children, were killed in Krasnodar region, while two were killed and 13 wounded in Belgorod. In Russian-annexed Sevastopol in Crimea, at least two people died, and 10 were injured after a Ukrainian drone struck a bus, according to the Moscow-installed governor. In Russian-controlled Luhansk, two civilians, including a 16-year-old boy, were reported killed.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian infrastructure faced sustained bombardment. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that overnight Russian ballistic missile hits on railway infrastructure in Kyiv killed at least one person and wounded another. Another attack on the Kyiv region on Saturday afternoon killed two others, officials said. One person was killed overnight in the Zaporizhia region, while a daytime attack killed three others and wounded 15, according to local officials. Additionally, a Russian drone attack hit a passenger train on Ukraine’s border with Poland near Yahodyn railway station, narrowly missing a diplomatic train.
Putin Warns of Retaliation as Trump Criticizes Ukrainian Oil Strikes
Russian President Vladimir Putin responded to the cross-border drone campaigns during an appearance on state broadcaster Vesti TV, characterizing Ukraine’s actions against Russian economic targets as opening a “Pandora’s box”.
“The Kyiv regime set out to damage our economy. What did it do? It opened this Pandora’s box itself.”
Putin added that Russia’s actions are far more painful and destructive, stating that retaliation will not be long in coming.
The strikes on Russian energy facilities also drew pressure from the United States. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Irish Open, which is being played at his Doonbeg golf club, US President Donald Trump called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries and other infrastructure used to produce and distribute diesel, pointing to a global shortage after US diesel prices hit a record on Friday, soaring past $6 a gallon on average.
European Allies Pledge Air Defense and Border Security Support
In response to the intensifying air campaigns, international leaders and regional officials weighed in on the broader conflict dynamics. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Monday during a press conference in Finland that Europe was facing decisive weeks and months ahead in terms of defending the freedom and peace of our continent
against Russia, adding that he would do everything he can to keep up support and convince people this is in their own interest.
Meanwhile, looking beyond the United States amid an escalating trade war with Washington, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced at the Toronto International Film Festival that Ottawa is pursuing a unique alliance
with the 27-nation European Union, dismissing reports of seeking associate membership.
During a discussion at the Yalta European Strategy meeting in Kyiv on Saturday, Polish representatives addressed hybrid attacks on Europe, stating that Poland would defeat Russia quickly if Moscow attempted an attack on the alliance, pointing to overwhelming air power superiority.
Amid the ongoing conflict and security fears, Russians are still fleeing abroad, with a 28-year-old digital content marketer speaking in Krasnodar before heading for the border with Georgia to cite fears of a new mobilization, the political situation, and complications over authorities restricting internet access.
