The incident occurred while the AS-550 Fennec helicopter of the Danish Air Force was making planned frames of the Russian frigate. According to the TV2 channel citing the Danish Military Command and the Danish Ministry of Defense, the Russian frigate released two signal flares in the direction of the helicopter. The Danish military specified that the Russian frigate issued two signal flares, and one of them flew at a dangerous and close distance to the aircraft.
Signal flares are a variety of pyrotechnic devices that can be used at sea to signal and attract attention, as noted by media outlets. Military analysts note that both the vessel and the aircraft had the right to be in the area.

A representative of the center stated that the drone likely arrived from the direction of Belarus and was shot down near the village of Pratkunai near Kaunas, the second-largest city in the country.
This marked the first drone shot down by NATO aviation over Lithuania.
