Emmys In Memoriam Excludes Chuck Norris, Nicholas Brendon and More
Among the most prominent omissions was action-movie icon Chuck Norris, who died in March at age 86. Norris was recognized as the long-running star of the pop-culture hit Walker, Texas Ranger, which ran for 196 episodes from 1993 to 2001. Also missing from the broadcast tribute was Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Nicholas Brendon, who died in March at age 54 following a number of years suffering addiction and health problems. Brendon’s exclusion drew particular attention because the In Memoriam segment did recognize his former co-star Anthony Head, and earlier in the telecast, Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz alluded to his passing while presenting an award.
Additional Omissions From the Televised Tribute
The broadcast also omitted several other well-known television actors and personalities. Daveigh Chase, who died in June at age 35, was left off the screen after battling meningitis and an infection in her blood that led to septic issues, with chronic polysubstance use later listed as a secondary cause of death. Although Chase was recognized for film work such as Lilo & Stitch and The Ring, she also held television credits on series including Big Love, Charmed, Oliver Beene, Betsy’s Kindergarten Adventures, and the Lilo & Stitch animated series.
Patrick Muldoon, best known for his role as Austin Reed on Days of Our Lives, died in April at age 57 and was likewise excluded. Morgan, Tom Kane, and 30 Rock performer Grizz Chapman.
Understanding Awards Show Limitations and Online Controversy
As is typical with annual awards ceremonies, the televised In Memoriam segment frequently draws criticism online for the names it leaves out. Because the broadcast allows only a few minutes to recognize a full year of losses across the television industry, the tribute does not always include every person honored by the Television Academy online. Despite the omissions, the broadcast featured extensive segments for several major television figures. The evening included recognitions for Dolly Parton, James Van Der Beek, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Diane Ladd, June Lockhart, Tim Curry, Sam Neill, Hayden Panettiere, Robert Carradine, Anthony Geary, Demond Wilson, Gil Gerard, Pat Crowley, Eric Dane, Robert Duvall, and Bob Mackie, who died on the same day as the ceremony.
Special extended tributes honored Catherine O’Hara and Rob Reiner. For O’Hara, former Schitt’s Creek co-stars Dan Levy and Annie Murphy joined Home Alone co-star Macaulay Culkin on stage, with Culkin stating he will never forget about her.
For Reiner, Jamie Lee Curtis delivered a tearful tribute calling him generous and kind and funny as hell and a friend to all.
Curtis noted that Reiner had won a posthumous Emmy for guest actor in a comedy series for The Bear the previous week, setting a record for the longest gap between acting Emmys at 48 years.
