CD Sales Boost U.S. Recorded Music Revenue in Early 2026

Consumer demand for CDs surged in early 2026, driving a 58.6 percent jump in CD revenue and helping push total U.S. recorded music revenue up 6.9 percent to US$6.0bil, according to data released on Tuesday by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Physical music media is experiencing an unexpected financial revival. Driven primarily by a substantial increase in compact disc purchases and steady momentum from vinyl, revenue from physical formats jumped 25.9 percent to US$731.5mil during the first half of the year, according to RIAA data.

How CD and Vinyl Sales Powered U.S. Music Revenue

The overall recorded music market expanded to US$6.0bil in the first half of 2026, marking a 6.9 percent increase from the previous year. While streaming remains the dominant economic driver—accounting for US$4.9bil of the total—physical formats are punching above their weight class. Vinyl revenue climbed 17.7 percent, but the standout metric belongs to compact discs, which generated a massive 58.6 percent increase in revenue since the beginning of the year.

That financial jump translates directly to unit movement. Consumers bought 5.5 million more compact discs this year compared to the same timeframe in 2025, bringing total CD sales to 17.5 million units. That represents a 45.7 percent increase in actual physical units sold, proving the revival is rooted in tangible consumer buying habits rather than mere price inflation.

The Generation Z Factor and Pop Culture Drivers

Younger buyers, particularly Generation Z, are fueling a broader retro tech boom. Their musical tastes increasingly align with older catalogs, spanning 1990s releases and earlier eras. Beyond mere nostalgia, owning physical merchandise provides a tangible connection to artists in an era dominated by intangible digital files.

Popular culture also plays a direct role in chart trajectories. High-profile releases and adjacent media projects actively drive listening habits. For instance, the release of BTS and their album ARIRANG contributed meaningfully to the sales spike, though industry figures note that even excluding K-pop catalogs, CD sales still grew by 6.7 percent. Meanwhile, visual media projects like the documentary The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel generated an 11 percent surge in the group’s domestic streams.

Streaming Resilience Alongside Physical Growth

Despite the remarkable resurgence of compact discs and vinyl records, streaming continues to anchor the modern music economy. Subscription tiers showed steady upward movement, with paid streaming revenue rising 6.4 percent to US$3.4bil during the first half of the year. Total streaming revenue reached US$4.9bil.
