According to that reporting, Manchester City was found guilty on 114 of 115 charges tied to breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations following a four-year investigation.

The underlying charges date back to an initial investigation launched in 2023. Sourced reports highlighted that the club faced accusations of violating financial rules across the 2009-2010 and 2017-2018 seasons, specifically targeting operating costs and revenue generation involving sponsorship agreements and related parties.
The financial allegations originally surfaced through leaked documents obtained by the German publication Der Spiegel via a whistleblower. Those files suggested the club had maneuvered around Financial Fair Play guidelines by inflating commercial revenues and routing extra compensation to former manager Roberto Mancini for an advisory role with another club owned by UAE billionaire Sheik Mansour more than for his work with City. UEFA previously banned City from the Champions League for two years in 2020, but the suspension was later overturned.
Potential penalties include fines, points deductions, suspension or expulsion from the Premier League, according to The Independent.

Mamdani also celebrated the New York Knicks winning the NBA Finals this summer, giving a rousing speech at the championship parade to commemorate their first title in 53 years, stating, The Knicks did not just win for New York City… They won like New York City.
The Ugandan-born mayor is an outspoken supporter of Arsenal, Manchester City’s primary domestic rival. Arsenal won the Premier League back in May for its first title in 22 years, which coincidentally came after Manchester City drew 1–1 with Bournemouth, leaving Arsenal at the top of the league.
Earlier this year in May, Mamdani wrote an op-ed for The Athletic about the team’s Premier League win and shared what the club means to him, detailing its multicultural identity and connection to African football:
“For those of us with African roots, Arsenal represented something larger. This was a club that embraced African players before much of Europe bothered to scout the continent seriously. A club that sent players to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). A club where players from Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Cameroon were central to our story,” Mamdani wrote. “It was a love of a club that cherished its roots; that nurtured players such as Jack Wilshere and Max Dowman from Arsenal’s academy, Hale End, all the way through to the first team.”
“It was a love of a team as multicultural as the city it calls home, where immigrants from Pakistan and Poland and Paraguay have all found common cause in hating Spurs,” he added, referring to the team’s diversity and long-awaited win. “And it was a love rooted in hope — that one day something might change, that one day someone like Mikel Arteta might walk through the door and replace nostalgia with silverware.”
