Wedela Tavern Massacre Leaves 17 Dead

The first attack unfolded around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, at a tavern in Wedela township in Gauteng’s West Rand district, southwest of Johannesburg. Eight suspects armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols opened fire on patrons drinking outside before moving inside the premises to continue the shooting, according to police reports.

Emergency medical personnel declared 17 people dead at the scene. The victims included 13 men and four women. Another 15 patrons sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to medical facilities for treatment. Attackers also robbed several victims of their mobile phones and set two vehicles on fire before fleeing in two other vehicles.

South Africa records roughly 60 murders a day among its population of 62 million, giving the country one of the highest homicide rates globally. Officials and crime experts have long pointed to the abundance of legal and illegal firearms as a primary driver of the bloodshed. While homicides frequently impact the nation’s poorest communities—often driven by gang rivalries and informal business competition—the frequency of multi-gunmen mass shootings has escalated.

Official statistics recorded 5,427 homicides during the three-month period between April and June. In response to the soaring crime levels, President Cyril Ramaphosa deployed soldiers in March as part of a yearlong operation to support police in violence hotspots around Johannesburg and Cape Town. When announcing the deployment, Ramaphosa condemned organized gang activity, calling it the most immediate threat to our democracy, our society and our economic development.
