Airfares across Cyprus and Greece climbed notably in August 2026, defying a broader European Union trend where passenger flight prices ticked downward. Eurostat figures show Cypriot air travel rose about 5 percent year-on-year, while Greek fares surged by 16.3 percent against a background of widening inflation gaps.
August Airfare Divergence Between Cyprus, Greece and the European Union
Travelers in Cyprus and Greece faced starkly higher flying costs in August compared with the rest of the bloc according to the latest figures Eurostat released. While passenger air transport prices across the European Union averaged a 0.4 percent decline year-on-year, prices for passenger air transport in August 2026 in Cyprus climbed by approximately 5 percent.
Greece experienced an even steeper upward shift, recording a 16.3 percent annual jump in airfares. That increase marked the largest surge among all member states across the continent, placing Greek air travel inflation well ahead of Ireland, which followed with a 14.4 percent rise.
The contrast across member states highlighted a fractured travel market. Flight prices dropped in 10 EU countries during the summer push. Slovakia registered the sharpest reduction at 61.2 percent, followed by Spain with a 15.8 percent drop and Lithuania with a modest 0.9 percent dip.
Package Holiday Pricing Trends in Cyprus and Greece
Beyond individual flight tickets, packaged leisure trips also grew more expensive for regional consumers. Package holiday prices increased by 3.7 percent in Cyprus and 6.3 percent in Greece. Those adjustments outpaced or aligned with broader regional shifts, as bloc-wide package tours rose by 3.2 percent, matching the European Union’s overall inflation rate for the month.
Eurostat calculates these travel metrics using the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices. The index captures organized excursions, travel, accommodation, and meals, recording cost changes at the exact moment a tour is purchased rather than during the actual travel dates.
The upward pressure on package tours was not uniform across the continent. Belgium led the bloc with a 16.2 percent surge in holiday package costs, trailed by Portugal at 14.3 percent, Sweden at 12.8 percent, Lithuania at 12.3 percent, and Romania at 11.9 percent. Conversely, only four member states recorded annual declines in holiday package prices, led by a 21.1 percent drop in Estonia, alongside decreases in Spain, Italy, and Ireland.
Broader Inflation Pressures Across the Cypriot Economy
The rising cost of getting away coincides with a high-inflation environment within Cyprus itself. The harmonised inflation rate in Cyprus reached 5.2 percent in August, marking the third-highest figure across the entire European Union.
Only Romania, at 6.3 percent, and Lithuania, at 5.6 percent, recorded steeper inflation pressures than Cyprus during the month. By comparison, the broader European Union average inflation rate stood at 3.2 percent, leaving Cypriot consumers dealing with cost-of-living increases significantly above the continental norm.
