Apple has introduced the iPhone Duo, marking the company’s first folding smartphone design, according to Apple. The device is designed to offer a folding form factor while maintaining a pocketable profile. When opened, it features a dual-display screen described as the thinnest iPhone design with the largest display ever included on an iPhone, measuring 50 percent larger than the display found on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Introduction to the iPhone Duo
In addition to its large internal folding screen, the device includes an exterior display that accounts for more than 90 percent of the size of an iPhone 18 Pro display. The hardware is paired with a newly designed iOS that supports various orientations and positioning methods to provide added versatility.
Display Technology and Design Specifications
Both the internal and external displays utilize Super Retina XDR technology and maintain the aspect ratio of a 7.6-inch screen. The internal display is constructed from 10 ultra-thin layers and features a special nanotexture surface finish intended to reduce glare. It also uses a wide viewing angle OLED panel capable of reaching a peak brightness of 3,000 nits.
To maintain a clean and uninterrupted visual area, the FaceTime camera is positioned beneath the display, remaining hidden until activated. The physical build incorporates durability features such as a grade-5 titanium frame and hinge cover, a scratch-resistant coating on the inner screen, Ceramic Shield on both the front and back, and IP68 water and dust resistance.
Camera Capabilities and Features
The iPhone Duo is equipped with an advanced camera system that includes a 48-megapixel main Fusion camera, a 48-megapixel ultra-wide Fusion camera, a 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera, and an under-display FaceTime camera. The system supports 48-megapixel photos and 4K video recording at 120 frames per second.
Several new software and shooting functions are built into the device, including:
- Smart Shutter: Automatically detects when everyone is ready and captures the photo without requiring the user to race against a self-timer.
- Duo Preview: Provides preview capabilities to assist with framing.
- Kids’ Animations: Designed to help subjects look their best during portrait capture.
- Duo FaceTime: Expands group calls to include people situated around the user.
Performance and Modes of Use
Under the hood, the device is powered by the A20 Pro chip, which features a dual 16-core Neural Engine specifically built to handle complex artificial intelligence tasks.
The folding design allows the smartphone to be used in multiple physical configurations:
- Posazený (Placed): Users can lay the device down at an adjusted viewing angle for watching shows or following fitness workouts, keeping horizontal controls accessible.
- Postavený (Standing): Allows the device to display a clock, photos, and widgets in StandBy mode while the outer display is used to stream media.
Additionally, Apple notes that the iPhone Duo retains its resale value longer than other smartphones and provides a straightforward migration path for users transitioning from Android devices.
