Bonnaroo cancels 2027 festival due to extreme weather

The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival has announced that it will take a much-needed year off in 2027, according to an announcement shared by organizers on the festival’s website and social media platforms. The decision marks the first time since the festival was founded in 2002 that organizers have voluntarily taken a fallow year, outside of industry-wide disruptions and weather cancellations.

Bonnaroo Cancels 2027 Festival Following Severe Weather Challenges

Organizers stated that the Manchester, Tennessee, festival grounds known as The Farm require time to recuperate from back-to-back year of storms, including heavy rainfall that affected the final day of the 2026 Bonnaroo festival. The recent event took place from June 11 through June 14, featuring headlining performances from artists including the Strokes, Noah Kahan, Kesha, Role Model, and a reduced Thursday lineup headlined by Skrillex, alongside livestream broadcasts on Disney+ and Hulu.

Infrastructure Investments and Weather Trouble at The Farm

The announcement follows years of weather-related operational hurdles at the festival site. Prior to the 2026 event, producers working with Live Nation’s C3 Presents invested significant effort and millions of dollars into infrastructure upgrades designed to strengthen the property against extreme conditions. These improvements featured 4.5 miles of new roadways, 135 acres of new grass, and enhanced drainage systems across the campgrounds and Centeroo, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Despite those upgrades, heavy rain on the final Sunday of the 2026 festival led officials to order a temporary evacuation and closure of Centeroo, leaving portions of the grounds muddy upon reopening. Organizers acknowledged that despite the financial and physical investments, the main venue area needs an extended period to rest and recover from continuous severe weather impacts.

A History of Weather Disruptions and Cancellations

The 2027 pause comes after a tumultuous stretch for the Tennessee music gathering, which was co-founded 24 years ago by Knoxville native Ashley Capps through AC Entertainment before he departed following its sale to Live Nation. Over the past five years, the event has faced multiple cancellations.

The 2020 festival was initially postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic before being called off entirely. In 2021, organizers attempted to move the festival to September, but Hurricane Ida brought heavy rainfall that turned The Farm into a muddy mess, forcing another cancellation. Severe flooding similarly forced promoters to scrap the 2025 festival just a single day after it began.

Looking Ahead to the Future of the Festival

Speculation regarding the status of the 2027 event mounted on social media in the weeks leading up to the official announcement, as fans noted the unusual absence of standard post-festival date disclosures. Local reporting indicated that Manchester officials had not received formal notice regarding plans for the following year prior to the public statement.

While organizers did not provide a specific return date or address potential 2028 plans in their public statements, they expressed optimism about the festival’s long-term future. This wasn’t an easy decision, and not one we take lightly, but in our hearts, we know this break will only make Bonnaroo better, organizers wrote in their announcement published by Consequence, while thanking attendees for their continued support.
