Four astronauts launched from Florida aboard NASA’s Artemis II mission on Wednesday, embarking on a 10-day expedition around the Moon. The historic flight marks humanity’s first crewed journey beyond Earth orbit in 53 years, serving as a critical stepping stone for future lunar surface bases as space agencies race to establish a permanent presence.
Four astronauts blasted off from Florida on Wednesday on NASA’s Artemis II mission, a high-stakes voyage around the Moon that marks the United States’ boldest step yet toward returning humans to the lunar surface later this decade in a race with China. NASA’s Space Launch System rocket, topped with its Orion crew capsule, roared to life just before sunset at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, carrying its debut crew into Earth orbit.

Artemis II Crew and Flight Plan
If the mission proceeds as planned, the crew will fly around the Moon and back in their nearly 10-day expedition. The mission puts the spacecraft through its paces while venturing deeper into space than humans have ever gone.
The crew consists of NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, plus Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
The mission is the debut crewed test flight in the Artemis programme, successor to NASA’s Cold War-era Apollo project, and the world’s first to send astronauts in the vicinity of the Moon outside of Earth orbit in 53 years.
China Prepares Chang’e-7 Lunar South Pole Mission
While the United States advances its crewed programme, China’s space programme is preparing a lunar mission. China will head for the Moon as early as September with a unique mission aimed at extracting frozen water from the coldest parts of the lunar surface, according to SBS.
China has spent two decades building an increasingly ambitious lunar exploration programme named after Chang’e, the ancient Chinese goddess of the Moon. The Chang’e-7 mission is expected to set course for our celestial neighbour, although a recent failure involving a different Chinese rocket has introduced some uncertainty over the launch date.
The mission will consist of an orbiter, a lander, a rover, and a hopper. A lunar relay satellite, Queqiao-2, is already in place after launching separately in March 2024 to facilitate communication between Earth and the lunar surface.
Targeting Water Ice in Shackleton Crater
Scientists have known for nearly two decades that some form of water exists on the Moon. However, questions remain regarding how much accessible water ice lies inside permanently shadowed craters, how deeply it is buried, and what form it takes.

Accessing that water ice remains a significant challenge because it is found at the bottom of deep, hard-to-traverse craters where the Sun never shines, remaining untouched for billions of years at temperatures well below –200C. A prime candidate for the landing site is an illuminated ridge close to the Shackleton crater in the Lunar South Pole’s Aitken region, SBS reported.
The mission’s hopper is designed to leap over broken terrain and descend into craters where sunlight never reaches—places conventional wheeled vehicles cannot enter. The mission marks a transition from simply exploring the Moon to determining whether its resources can actually be used by future explorers.
Commercial and State Approaches to Lunar Exploration
Other nations are pursuing the same longer-term objective of making sustained lunar operations possible, though space agencies are taking different routes to solve the physical problems of the lunar environment. While Chang’e-7 is a coordinated state mission designed around a single, specific objective, NASA is building a lunar marketplace through its Commercial Lunar Payload Services programme.
NASA currently has 17 contracted deliveries carrying more than 60 instruments. Intuitive Machines’ IM-2 mission, Athena, previously attempted similar undertakings by carrying a drill, a mass spectrometer, a small hopping vehicle, and an experimental mobile communications network, though the lander fell over at the landing site and was powered down just one day after arriving, according to SBS.
