Clark bests Bueckers in clash of No. 1 picks as Fever top Wings

Caitlin Clark scored 29 points with 10 assists to steer the Indiana Fever to a 98-87 victory over the Dallas Wings at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Friday, emerging victorious in a star-studded point guard duel against Paige Bueckers.

The Gainbridge Fieldhouse Showdown and Star Dueling Performances

As point guard phenoms on the court and the league’s most recognizable names off it, Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers dueled for just the third time in their WNBA careers on Friday in Indianapolis. The pair of No. 1 picks delivered an explosive matchup for the fans in attendance, with Clark steering her squad to victory while Bueckers carried a shorthanded visiting lineup.

Clark finished the night with 29 points, 10 assists, and three rebounds. Her counterpart matched her scoring output point for point, as Bueckers also scored 29 points for the Wings, adding six assists and six rebounds.

“It was fun to watch for a little while,” Fever coach Stephanie White said of the faceoff. “… I thought it was two great players making great plays.”

With the win, Indiana improved its record to 22-12, capturing three straight victories and winning eight of its last 10 games. Dallas dropped to 20-15 on the season, having lost six of its last eight contests.

Third-Quarter Scoring Explosions Shape the Game

Both teams emerged from a sluggish first half to trade blows in a high-octane third quarter. Bueckers erupted for 13 points in the frame, matching the highest-scoring quarter of her season by shooting 4 of 6 from the field and drilling two 3-pointers.

Not to be outdone, Clark exploded for 17 points in the same period, tying the mark for points she’s notched in any quarter of her career. She shot 7 of 9 from the field during the frame, using the gravity of her perimeter threat to bypass overzealous defenders.

“The more I can do that, it puts (the other team) in rotation and allows my teammates to get open, too,” Clark said. “I think it kind of opened the floor up for everybody as we went through the end of the third quarter and into the fourth. So, yeah, just attacking the basket. Don’t fall in love with the 3-point shot.”

The performance marked the 20th career 20-point, 10-assist double-double of Clark’s career. No other player in league history has recorded more than 10 such games, and Clark has notched 10 of them during the current season alone.

Ankle Scare and Supporting Cast Fuel Indiana’s Push

The victory nearly took a severe turn for the hosts just before halftime. With 40.4 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Clark briefly exited the game and limped directly to the locker room after accidentally stepping on the foot of Wings forward Alysha Clark. Fans breathed a sigh of relief when she returned to the floor to start the third quarter showing no lingering effects.

Indiana received crucial bench scoring to secure the cushion necessary to pull away.

“I was shocked,” Harris said through a grin. “… It went in, so, oh well. It’s still a 3, banked or not.”

Meanwhile, Kelsey Mitchell added 23 points, netting 17 of them in the second half. Mitchell’s scoring night extended her WNBA single-season record to 18 straight games with at least 20 points. She sits two games shy of the all-time league record of 20 consecutive 20-point games, set by Las Vegas Aces superstar and four-time league MVP A’ja Wilson across the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Dallas Rotation Stretched Thin by Injury

The visiting side labored under severe depth constraints due to an extensive injury list. The Wings played without 2026 No. 1 pick Azzi Fudd (knee), All-Star starter Jessica Shepard (ankle), and backup guard Aziaha James (lower leg), who remains sidelined with a significant injury.
