War Secretary Pete Hegseth also traveled on the secret flight but boarded via external stairs to maintain the appearance of a typical flight, a US official told the outlet.

On the decoy aircraft, the traveling press pool was advised to keep their window shades closed in the press cabin. When reporters later questioned why the shades were shut, Trump told them they were probably on a dangerous flight, adding, But if I go, you go. Right?

The timing of the arrivals at RAF Mildenhall in Britain further highlighted the gap. The C-32A carrying Trump arrived at approximately 10:20 p.m. local time, while the decoy Air Force One and the media arrived minutes later. Despite the separate arrival, the press pool reported seeing Trump descend the stairs of the older Air Force One at 10:56 p.m., suggesting he reboarded the larger plane out of sight of the journalists before disembarking.

CBS News reported that US officials detected a credible plot to fire a missile at the plane. This occurred as the US military conducted large strikes in Iran in retaliation for attacks on merchant shipping.

Concerns specifically targeted the $400 million Boeing 747-8, a gift from the Qatari government that the US spent months retrofitting. While Trump flew to Ankara on this new jet, the Secret Service suggested using the older Air Force One for the return leg as a precaution. Sources told CBS News that the older planes possess laser technology capable of blinding incoming missiles, a system that can misdirect munitions—capabilities that remain unclear for the newer Qatari-gifted aircraft.

The White House has defended the security of the Qatari-donated aircraft despite the secret flight. Communications Director Steven Cheung stated that the jet is a state-of-the-art aircraft that has been fitted with high-level security protocols.
