London’s Trafalgar Square has a new bronze and blue addition as sculptor Tschabalala Self unveils Lady In Blue
on the Fourth Plinth. The contemporary work depicts an everyday metropolitan woman striding toward the future, replacing Teresa Margolles’ previous artwork in the prominent public commissioning space.
A bronze and blue sculpture celebrating an everyday urban resident has made its debut in one of the world’s most high-profile public art spaces. Created by New York artist Tschabalala Self, the monumental piece entitled Lady In Blue
stands prominently on Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth.

The towering new artwork marks the 16th contemporary commission to occupy the historic London square since the rotating exhibition program began in 1998. Self’s creation takes the place of Mil Veces un Instante (A Thousand Times in an Instant)
by artist Teresa Margolles.
Unlike many surrounding monuments dedicated to military commanders and historical monarchs, the newly installed bronze figure deliberately shifts focus toward ordinary contemporary life. The artist crafted the piece using a specialized patination process involving a pigment refined from lapis lazuli, an ancient semi-precious stone utilized by artists for thousands of years.

The sculpture aims to represent a young, metropolitan everywoman striding purposefully into the days ahead. Ahead of the public unveiling, the creator discussed the conceptual weight of placing the piece in a historic civic arena.
