Girls creator Lena Dunham welcomes baby girl delivered via surrogate

The 40-year-old writer and actor, widely known for creating and starring in the HBO television series Girls, shared the news alongside personal reflections on her path to motherhood. Dunham and Felber tied the knot in September 2021 after meeting on a blind date earlier that year in January 2021.

Surrogate Birth Details and First Moments in the Hospital

Dunham detailed the arrival of her daughter in her Vogue essay, writing that the baby arrived 13 days later than expected amid a solar eclipse and meteor shower. She began the op-ed with an anecdote from a mild November morning, describing herself as fresh off a red-eye – with a rictus grin of anxious enthusiasm plastered on the lower half of my face while my eyes filled with anxious tears – clutching the hand of a woman I had met in person only twice.

She described sitting on a hospital bed right beside the surrogate during delivery.

“I sat on a hospital bed, between the legs of a woman I hadn’t known a year ago, waiting for a glimpse of this person who I had been waiting for with something related to patience, but also none at all. I was so focused on our surrogate – in awe at her concentration, her period of quiet followed by what sounded like a roar – I forgot to look down until I heard our baby’s cry.”

When she finally looked down, Dunham saw her newborn daughter taking in the light and shadow with wide, unfocused eyes, blinking rapidly and gasping just as the surrogate did.

Dunham added that she felt bashful and dizzy with joy and noted that her daughter wriggled in my hands, slick as a seal, naked as the day she was born. A report from The New York Times stated the child actually arrived in August, though the exact timing remained subject to differing reports alongside Dunham’s published text.

Overcoming Endometriosis and Leaving the Fertility-Industrial Complex

The path to welcoming a child followed nearly two decades of severe health struggles. Dunham suffered from chronic pain caused by advanced endometriosis, leading her to undergo a total hysterectomy at 31 years old—during which she had her uterus, her cervix, and one of her ovaries removed.

In a 2020 essay in Harper’s Magazine, she explained her decision to walk away from what she described as the fertility-industrial complex following an unsuccessful IVF cycle. Looking back on her journey in her 2026 memoir, Famesick, and during an appearance on the Today show alongside Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones, she reflected on how central motherhood was to her identity.

She also spoke openly about the emotional hurdles of surrogate pregnancy, describing the cognitive dissonance of knowing her child was growing while feeling “powerlessto not experience it in her own body. She spentthe last 12 years circling the fertility drain,” as she put it.

In her published writing, Dunham expressed profound gratitude for the woman who carried her child. She described the surreal experience of finally meeting the surrogate, noting an instant connection upon their introduction.

To cope with the anticipation and feel connected to her daughter in utero, Dunham studied ultrasound images like a ghost hunter looking for signs of who the baby might be or what she might already know. She also immersed herself in buying baby clothes—LOTS of clothes—in quantities that embarrassed her. Beneath the obsessive shopping spree was a sentimental purpose: as the clothes stacked up in the box, they built a sense that her daughter was truly becoming real.
