As Apple enters the foldable market with its iPhone Duo starting at $1,999, T-Mobile has rolled out aggressive trade-in promotions and price cuts on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Motorola’s Razr Fold to capture consumer attention.
The smartphone market is shifting as Apple officially introduces its long-rumored entry into foldable devices. Revealed at a recent keynote under CEO John Ternus, the incoming iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for the 256GB storage configuration and is scheduled to launch on October 23, according to reporting by Mashable. While consumers wait for Apple’s hardware to hit shelves, rival manufacturers and major carriers are moving quickly to intercept potential buyers with steep discounts on established folding phones.
T-Mobile Promotions for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Motorola Razr Fold
Carriers are attempting to make high-end foldables more financially approachable against Apple’s high entry price. T-Mobile is currently offering the Mashable—effectively free—when customers trade in an eligible device on an Experience Beyond plan. Buyers who do not select that specific plan can still secure up to $1,100 off with an eligible trade-in on Experience More or Experience Beyond tiers, up to $500 off on most plans, or up to $250 off on Simple Choice plans.
Motorola’s foldable option is also seeing carrier price reductions. The Motorola Razr Fold, which carries a starting price of $1,899.99, is available with up to $1,100 off when paired with an eligible trade-in on the Experience Beyond plan. T-Mobile is also discounting the Razr Fold by up to $800 on Experience More or Experience Beyond plans, up to $500 on most other plans, and up to $250 on Simple Choice plans.
Direct Discounts on Samsung Hardware at Retailers
For buyers avoiding carrier financing contracts, direct retail price cuts are available on Samsung’s flagship hardware. Samsung has shaved $300 off the standard price of the Galaxy Z Fold 8, dropping the 256GB model down from $1,900 to $1,600, so you can get your hands on one for $1,600
according to CNET coverage. Additional storage tiers including 512GB and 1TB configurations are also discounted, though buyers utilizing this direct manufacturer deal must decline trade-in credit options to qualify. Meanwhile, Amazon is offering a direct $250 discount on the 256GB Galaxy Z Fold 8 alongside up to $600 in trade-in credit.

For users prioritizing a clamshell form factor, Samsung has discounted the Z Flip 8 down to $1,000 from its normal $1,200 price point on its official site. Reviewers note that the device features improved cover screen software and a sleek design.
Ecosystem Switching and Global Market Dynamics
Samsung is actively courting iOS users as market competition heats up. Globally, the share of iPhone users switching to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series launched in July reached 1.6 times that of the previous-generation foldables, a Samsung spokesperson told CNBC. In Europe, combined sales of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra saw a 50% increase compared to the Z Fold 7, with a 60% increase in iPhone users specifically transitioning to those new devices or the Z Flip 8, according to Samsung Global Newsroom data.

To reduce friction for switchers, Samsung updated its Smart Switch feature, allowing iPhone device owners to transfer data wirelessly by scanning a QR code without needing to install the Smart Switch application on their iOS device. In the United States, 30% of Galaxy Z Flip 8 buyers switched from competing brands, with the majority purchasing a foldable phone for the first time.
“The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 gave me a problem I didn’t expect: I genuinely didn’t want to stop using it.”

Market projections indicate that Samsung is positioned to lead the global foldable sector this year with a 32% market share, while Apple is anticipated to capture 25% upon entry, according to Counterpoint Research data released in July.
