military attack to break the US naval blockade if negotiations failed, citing a June 17 memorandum of understanding (MOU). The MOU, which aimed to end the war between Iran and the US, had set a 60-day window for resolving disputes over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil and gas.
Stalled Peace Talks and Escalating Hostilities
The MOU, signed in June, collapsed after disagreements over control of the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials argued the agreement granted Tehran management rights, while the US rejected this interpretation. Hostilities resumed in late July when Iran fired on vessels it claimed were using an unapproved route, prompting US missile strikes. Asked by reporters on Monday if the US was seeking to extend June’s interim agreement, Trump said no.
The US and Iran have exchanged strikes since the war began in February 2026, with Iran targeting US assets in Oman, Jordan, Kuwait, Israel, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. through the waterway, though at reduced levels.
Trump later told NBC’s Meet the Press that U.S. forces had bombed the hell out of them
after Iran attacked a container ship, the GFS Galaxy, which was disabled and forced its crew to use lifeboats.
The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared the Strait of Hormuz closed,
accusing vessels of ignoring warnings to follow approved routes. A senior adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, Mohsen Rezaee, stated, This strategic passage is more important than dozens of atomic bombs, and the Islamic Republic of Iran will protect it.
The IRGC also claimed to have destroyed the logistical support centres for naval vessels and the refuelling facilities for US aircraft carriers at the port of Duqm in Oman,
though the sultanate condemned the attack after hosting Iranian delegations for security talks.
Ongoing Negotiations and Uncertain Path Forward
Iran has separately been negotiating an agreement with Oman over management of the strait, with officials suggesting they are close to agreement, although progress has been slow.
The U.S. and Iran remain locked in a cycle of tit-for-tat strikes, with the Strait of Hormuz at the center of the conflict. Trump’s refusal to extend the truce and Iran’s threats of a military response have left the situation in limbo. The U.S.-run Joint Maritime Information Center reported that traffic was transiting the strait at reduced levels.
