JD Vance Targets Abdul El-Sayed at Sterling Heights Rally
The political clash in Michigan intensified sharply on Monday as U.S. Vice President JD Vance delivered a scathing attack against Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed during a rally in Sterling Heights. Speaking at an event organized by MAGA Inc., a major super PAC supporting President Donald Trump, Vance told the crowd that there is something very evil about El-Sayed’s approach to politics.
According to CNN, Vance characterized the Democratic nominee as representative of a growing national trend focused on fighting for one class at the expense of others rather than unifying the country. Vance contrasted El-Sayed with Republican candidate Mike Rogers, urging voters to support Rogers in November to ensure representation for all Michigan residents.

Vance elaborated further during the gathering, stating, What I see is a man who shows empathy and compassion to those who share his religion, but has none for those who are not; it is a person who is ready to defend a killer as long as he looks ‘right,’ but is unable to understand the suffering of an innocent child if that child belongs to a ‘wrong’ faith.
Personal Tensions Flare Over Spouses and Past Comments
The confrontation took an intensely personal turn as Vance addressed recent remarks regarding his family. Vance stated that El-Sayed possessed a weird habit of discussing his family, issuing a direct warning: Whatever you want to talk about, Abdul, do not ever say my wife’s name, she is far too high and noble to be within your reach.
The feud between the two candidates intensified after El-Sayed responded earlier in August to a video of Vance speaking at a campaign rally where he referenced his late grandfather, known as “Papaw.” El-Sayed questioned on the platform X whether Vance would take his wife through time to meet his grandfather. Usha Vance is the daughter of Indian immigrants and was raised Hindu.
El-Sayed told CNN on Monday that he prefers not to talk about the spouses of officials at all, explaining that his comment targeted a political philosophy which he believes presumes certain Americans are “more American” than others.
Abdul El-Sayed Fires Back at Republicans
El-Sayed rejected Vance’s accusations during the exchange, asserting that the Trump administration and Republicans are the ones committing evil. In a statement reported by CNN, El-Sayed outlined his counter-argument:
The evil lies in taking away health care from working people in exchange for tax breaks for billionaires. And the evil lies in forcing people to pay more for grocery goods and fuel, while pushing toward trade wars and actual wars. The evil lies in dividing people for personal gain. El-Sayed added that the state of Michigan is above receiving lessons and sermons from puppets directed from the states of Ohio and Florida. He stated that Michigan residents understand the stakes and will prove it at the ballot boxes in November to end the political career of Mike Rogers and push him out of the picture.
Additionally, El-Sayed recently apologized for remarks he made following a March attack on a synagogue in Michigan, where he stated that violence is a circle and that the wounded hurt others. The attacker had lost his family in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon a week prior to the Michigan attack. At the time, El-Sayed also condemned the attack on the synagogue and antisemitism in general.
