Kenneth Walker III, Patrick Mahomes Lead Chiefs Past Broncos

The Kansas City Chiefs opened their 2026 NFL season with a 31-10 victory over the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium on Sept. 14, 2026. Patrick Mahomes returned from a torn ACL and LCL, while running back Kenneth Walker rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns in his team debut.

So much for Denver taking over the AFC West. The first Monday Night Football matchup of the 2026 season was a difficult outing for the Denver Broncos, who fell 31-10 to the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

The season opener provided plenty of answers for a Kansas City squad facing questions over the offseason. Four ESPN analysts—Domonique Foxworth, Tedy Bruschi, Rex Ryan, and Mike Greenberg—had predicted a Denver sweep in their Week 1 panel predictions, a clean sweep that prompted a pointed one-word reaction of Oopsies on Instagram from Brittany Mahomes.

Patrick Mahomes Returns From ACL Tear in Season Opener

All eyes were fixed on Patrick Mahomes as he made his competitive return nine months after tearing his ACL and LCL last December. The quarterback finished the night with 184 passing yards and two passing touchdowns while running in another score.

Early in the game, on just his 10th snap, Mahomes escaped the pocket and scrambled 15 yards for a touchdown while absorbing contact from two defenders. Next Gen Stats clocked his top speed on the play at 15.8 mph.

“I just wanted to play. I had done so much rehab and so much work to put myself in this position. I just wanted to get out there and play. This is what you do it for. That was definitely the moment, physically, to say all this work has paid off. I didn’t feel anything.”

Though Mahomes admitted he was occasionally too quick with his reads and released the ball before letting routes fully develop, his mobility erased lingering doubts about his surgically repaired left knee just 274 days after suffering the injury.

Kenneth Walker Dominates Ground Game in Team Debut

While Mahomes engineered the offense, Kansas City’s $43 million offseason prize stole the spotlight. Fresh off winning Super Bowl LX MVP honors with the Seattle Seahawks, Kenneth Walker put on a rushing clinic against the divisional rival.

Walker finished with 191 total yards, churning out 173 rushing yards and catching an 18-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes. His night included a back-breaking 60-yard touchdown run off a fourth-and-1 play-call in the third quarter, making him the first Chiefs running back to cross 140 rushing yards and score a touchdown in a single game since Kareem Hunt accomplished the feat in 2017.

“I’ve been saying it all off-season that K9 is going to make a difference. That offensive line and K9, they took over the game. It went really well.”

Travis Kelce Climbs All-Time Tight End Receiving List

Amid the offensive fireworks, veteran tight end Travis Kelce cemented his status in NFL history. Kelce hauled in a 59-yard catch-and-run down the sideline during the contest, finishing the evening with 71 receiving yards to lead all Kansas City targets.

The long reception allowed Kelce to surpass Jason Witten’s career mark of 13,046 yards, moving him into second place on the NFL’s all-time list for receiving yards by a tight end with 13,073. Former Chiefs star Tony Gonzalez remains the all-time leader at 15,127 yards. Watching from the stands alongside actor Tom Cruise was Taylor Swift, Kelce’s wife.

Bo Nix and Denver Offense Stall Out in Second Half

Denver’s night started with promise when quarterback Bo Nix connected with Evan Engram on a quick first-quarter touchdown pass that knotted the game at 7-7. However, the Broncos’ offense quickly unraveled under newly minted offensive coordinator Davis Webb.

Nix was sacked four times and intercepted once by rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane on the game’s opening drive. After the early score, the Denver offense managed four consecutive punts before intermission and later failed to capitalize on a golden opportunity when safety Brandon Jones picked off Mahomes at the Kansas City 5-yard line.

A 10-yard penalty pushed the Broncos back, and Nix subsequently fumbled out of bounds near the 16-yard line, forcing Denver to settle for a field goal. A later fumble by Nix deep in his own territory was recovered by Chris Jones, setting up Walker’s touchdown catch that sealed the outcome.

The Chiefs return to action on Sunday with a matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, leaving the rest of the AFC West to chase an offense that proved its explosive capability right out of the gate.
