Modric Breaks the Deadlock in Prague
Croatia struck shortly after the restart following a tightly contested, goalless first half against the Czech Republic. Igor Matanovic laid the ball into the path of Luka Modric, allowing the 41-year-old captain to drive menacingly into the penalty area.
The strike marked a significant milestone for the veteran midfielder. The goal was his 30th for Croatia, underlining his enduring value to the national side despite his age.
Perisic Supplies the Winner After Czech Equalizer
The visitor’s advantage proved short-lived. Just minutes after Modric’s opener, some defensive blundering by Croatia gifted the Czech Republic an opening, allowing Adam Karabec to equalize in the 53rd minute.
In the 77th minute, the PSV winger whipped an excellent cross in from the left flank toward Marco Pasalic. Pasalic got in front of his direct opponent and headed the ball cleanly through goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek’s legs to make it 1-2.
Late VAR Drama Denies Czech Republic
The Czech side nearly salvaged a draw in the closing stages. Just two minutes after falling behind, Matej Radosta turned the ball into the net, sparking celebrations among the home team.
Those celebrations were cut short by the video assistant referee. VAR intervened and spotted Adam Hlozek in an offside position during the build-up, prompting officials to rule out the equalizer and preserve Croatia’s advantage until the final whistle.
