The United Arab Emirates suspended all trade, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran, citing two ballistic missiles launched toward its territorial waters. While Iranian officials rejected the accusation, the abrupt economic freeze shatters months of fragile diplomatic thawing between Abu Dhabi and Tehran.
The latest confrontation shatters more than two months of diplomatic and economic recovery between the two Gulf neighbors. Following a memorandum of understanding reached between Washington and Tehran in June that later unraveled in July, Abu Dhabi had actively sought to rebuild channels with Iran. Commercial flights had quietly resumed, Iranian ports saw returning traffic, and Emirati authorities had begun allowing some 20,000 Iranian residents who were stranded outside the country when the war began to return. Dubai’s financial district had also started welcoming back bankers.
That balancing act collapsed on Tuesday when emergency alerts sounded on resident phones, warning of a potential missile threat.
Air Defense Detection and Maritime Incidents off the Emirati Coast
According to the UAE defense ministry, air-defense systems tracked two ballistic missiles launched from Iranian territory on Tuesday. Officials stated that the first projectile fell outside territorial waters, while the second landed within them. No injuries or property damage were reported from the strike, which officials later assessed was directed at maritime traffic.
The incident marks the first direct Iranian attack on the UAE since May. During the initial weeks of the conflict that began on February 28, the UAE bore the brunt of regional hostilities, absorbing nearly 3,000 incoming missiles and drones. While other Gulf states faced renewed strikes after the June ceasefire frayed, the UAE had reported no direct incoming fire until this week.
Tensions at sea had already been mounting. Abu Dhabi accused Tehran of repeatedly targeting oil tankers operated by the state-owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Company in the Strait of Hormuz during the weeks preceding the missile launch.
Economic Fallout and the Complete Halt of Commercial Exchanges
The retaliation was swift. Following the missile event, the UAE Foreign Ministry announced an indefinite economic cutoff.

The total economic freeze marks a severe escalation in Abu Dhabi’s posture toward Tehran. Earlier in the conflict, the UAE recalled its ambassador and shut down institutions linked to the Iranian regime and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including an Iranian state-linked hospital in Dubai alongside local schools and community centers found to be violating domestic laws.
Tehran Categorically Rejects Missile Allegations
Iranian officials pushed back immediately against the accusations. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei issued a statement categorically rejecting the claim that Tehran had fired missiles toward the Gulf state.

Broader Diplomatic Deadlock and Strait of Hormuz Pressures
The abrupt rupture in UAE-Iran relations coincides with a total diplomatic standstill between Washington and Tehran. President Donald Trump confirmed that the United States is not engaged in any talks with Iran and has no plans to restart them, noting that the expired 60-day ceasefire agreement will not be extended.
Control of the Strait of Hormuz remains a central friction point. While Washington maintains that the vital trade corridor is operational under U.S. control, commercial vessel traffic through the passage stays severely depressed following ongoing attacks on shipping, including an incident earlier in the week that left one person dead.
