Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest player ratings: Isak and Munoz score in draw

Liverpool twice fought back from behind to draw 2-2 with Nottingham Forest in a Premier League match at Anfield on August 29, 2026. Alexander Isak and Víctor Muñoz scored for the hosts, while Dan Ndoye and Morgan Gibbs-White found the net for Forest.

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola remains still searching for his first league win following last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Newcastle United. The result mirrored the club’s opening-weekend draw, leaving the home side twice forced to recover from deficits against a disciplined visiting defense.

First-Half Breakthrough and Match Action

Nottingham Forest started on the front foot as they looked to level the contest quickly, and their pressure was met by an impressive Forest defence who held firm and limited any clear opportunities for the home side in the early exchanges. Matz Sels was commanding and it was his punt up the field that led to Ndoye’s goal. Dan Ndoye opened the scoring for Nottingham Forest in the 24th minute, punishing more lackadanisical defending from the Reds, and only an Alisson wonder save prevented the visitors from doubling their lead.

Florian Wirtz’s offside goal was the best Liverpool had mustered by the halftime whistle, as Andoni Iraola’s first half of competitive action in Anfield’s home dugout hardly went to plan with Forest entering the break with a deserved advantage. Forest had Nikola Milenkovic as part of a backline that initially made it incredibly hard for Liverpool to break them down, alongside Jair Cunha delivering a strong performance and Murillo putting in a solid shift. Ola Aina was relentless all game and constantly asked questions of Liverpool, while James McAtee was very tidy on the ball in an impressive performance, and Xaver Schlager put in a good display coming in for the injured Ibrahim Sangare.

Isak and Muñoz Strike to Rescue a Point

Liverpool started on the front foot after the change of ends as they looked to level the contest quickly. The Reds found a way back onto level terms on the hour thanks to a brilliant turn and cross from Gakpo on the right flank, as the winger was sent on his way by Wirtz as he spun two defenders to deliver a low ball across the six-yard box for Isak to tap home at the back post. Alexander Isak equalised for Liverpool on the hour mark.

Liverpool continued to dominate the ball, but the next major moment came for the visitors with 20 minutes remaining. Forest substitute Liam Delap took a quick throw-in from the left, which allowed Williams to advance into the Reds penalty area; the defender got to the ball and flicked a shot goalwards, though the onrushing Alisson was found to have taken him down and a penalty awarded. Visiting captain Gibbs-White stepped up to duly convert from 12 yards, dispatching his shot in the top left corner to restore Forest’s one-goal advantage from the spot in the 70th minute.

Iraola responded with a number of substitutes as Liverpool looked to find another levelling goal in the game. However, it was two players already on the pitch who combined to find a second equaliser with eight minutes remaining. Wirtz slipped a pass into the feet of Munoz, and Victor Munoz, a summer signing from Osasuna, then showed great feet to turn and shoot, lashing in another equalizer that crashed in off the underside of the bar via a slight deflection to secure a hard-fought point in a remarkably similar match to their Premier League opener against Newcastle United.

Player Performance and Transfer News Context

Víctor Muñoz scored a spectacular equaliser in the 82nd minute. Muñoz’s performance on his first Liverpool start earns him the Player of the Match award. The young winger provided Liverpool with a consistent attacking threat before scoring the decisive goal that rescued a point for Andoni Iraola’s team.

There were familiar issues across the field for Liverpool during Saturday’s encounter, but perhaps most worrying was the continued anonymity of record signing Alexander Isak during the first half. Reflecting on his integration, Liverpool striker Alexander Isak stated: There is always time to get used to a new style. We are really working hard to try to play the game he [Iraola] wants us to play; when we start doing that better, I have no doubt the results will come as well.

On a day it was announced Liverpool had agreed a deal with Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola that could be worth £123 million, Alisson Becker fouled former Liverpool teammate Neco Williams in the penalty area.
