The High Commissioner of Malaysia to Singapore, H.E. Datin Paduka Anizan Siti Hajjar Adnin, joined government and business leaders at the US-ASEAN Strategic Business Forum at EDITION Singapore, together with representatives from MITI Singapore, to discuss economic cooperation and regional opportunities with United States stakeholders.
Held in Singapore, the forum brought together business and institutional stakeholders for discussions on regional developments, business opportunities and the future of ASEAN-US relations. The engagement provided an opportunity to discuss the importance of strengthening business ties and deepening economic cooperation between the United States and ASEAN.
Diplomatic Engagement and Ministerial Discussions in Singapore
The engagement provided a platform for the Malaysian High Commissioner to exchange views with Dr. Tan See Leng, Minister for Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry), Mr. Kishore Mahbubani, Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Research Institute (ARI) at the National University of Singapore (NUS), and Mr. Steve Okun, Founder and CEO of APAC Advisor.
During the gathering, discussions focused on developments in the region, opportunities for business engagement and the outlook for ASEAN-US relations. The participation of the Malaysian High Commissioner also highlighted Malaysia’s engagement with business and policy stakeholders on issues relevant to regional economic cooperation. The forum provided an opportunity for participants to share perspectives on the evolving regional environment and explore areas of mutual interest involving ASEAN and the United States. For Malaysia, the engagement offered a setting for continued interaction with representatives from government, academia and the business community.
Commercial Foundations and Regional Economic Integration
The discussions also reflected the role of business networks and institutional dialogue in supporting closer economic relations between ASEAN member states and the United States. Participants exchanged views on developments affecting the region, potential business opportunities and the future direction of ASEAN-US relations. The gathering in Singapore concluded with continued exchanges among leaders and stakeholders on regional developments, business opportunities and economic cooperation between ASEAN and the United States.
Workplace Leadership and Inclusive Growth Perspectives
In a separate engagement, AustCham Singapore continued a conversation with Andrew Stevens, Chair of the Champions of Change Coalition, in a session exploring the commercial case for inclusive leadership and what it takes to build workplaces where everyone can thrive. Following a conversation with Champions of Change Founder Elizabeth Broderick AO, Andrew Stevens offered a perspective drawing on more than 16 years of experience with Champions of Change and his own leadership across business, technology, manufacturing, sustainability and governance.
Moderated by AustCham Singapore Secretary Sue-Ann Wilson, the discussion explored:
- The leadership shadow – how what leaders prioritise, say and do sends powerful signals throughout an organisation.
- Moving from individual action to system change – redesigning systems and processes to create equality of opportunity, rather than relying solely on individual advocacy.
- Unlocking the full workforce – addressing the structural barriers that prevent organisations from accessing the full breadth of available talent.
- Inclusive AI – ensuring AI is designed and implemented in ways that expand opportunity rather than reinforce existing inequalities.
- Creating workplaces where everyone can thrive – making safety, respect and opportunity fundamental to organisational performance.
The conversation reinforced a point from Elizabeth Broderick’s session: inclusive leadership is not simply about doing the right thing. It is about building better organisations. Acknowledgments were extended to Andrew Stevens for sharing his experience and insights openly, to Emily Follett, Australian Deputy High Commissioner to Singapore, and incoming President Batya Shulman and St. James’s Place for hosting the session, alongside participants from the Australian High Commission, Singapore.
