A suspect wanted for the April ambush and murder of two KwaZulu-Natal Crime Intelligence officers was shot and killed during a police operation in Inanda on Friday, September 25, 2026. The confrontation also left a Special Task Force member wounded in the hand.
The Mount Edgecombe Ambush and the Deaths of Nel and Khuzwayo
The operation in Inanda brings a violent confrontation to a head nearly five months after a daylight attack shook Durban. On April 30, 2026, Captain Louis Nel and Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo were travelling in an unmarked state vehicle when they came under heavy gunfire along Flanders Drive in Mount Edgecombe. At least five men, positioned inside the cab and the back of a bakkie and armed with high-calibre rifles, gave chase to the undercover officers.
The vehicle was riddled with bullet holes before coming to a halt at a slight curve in the road. Nel was killed at the wheel after assailants fired directly into the windscreen, while Khuzwayo sustained critical injuries. KZN VIP Emergency Medical Services and security partners responded to the initial scene, where they found the damaged vehicle and the wounded officers. Khuzwayo battled for his life in the hospital before succumbing to his wounds on May 25.
Friday Morning Shootout and Arrests in Inanda
Police tracked a multidisciplinary team to a house in Inanda on Friday morning, September 25, 2026, cornering a primary suspect linked to the killings. According to provincial police officials, five other suspects had already been rounded up during the operation, but the final suspect put up armed resistance from inside a dwelling.
“Only this suspect gave police the runaround, shooting from inside the house. There were negotiations as he had a girlfriend inside the house. He released the girl, but he still didn’t want to budge. Unfortunately, he shot and injured one of the STF members.”

The ensuing gun battle left the suspect fatally wounded and resulted in an injury to a member of the SAPS Special Task Force. Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that the wounded tactical officer took a bullet to the hand during the raid.
State Condemnations and the Ongoing Investigation
The targeted assassination of the two intelligence operatives prompted high-level condemnation from law enforcement leadership. Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane labelled the original ambush a direct strike against state authority and the nation’s crime-fighting capabilities, pledging intensified efforts to safeguard officers in the line of duty.
Captain Nel was laid to rest on May 8 in Durban during a service attended by provincial dignitaries, including KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli and Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. During funeral proceedings, Mkhwanazi vowed that the perpetrators would face justice dead or alive
