Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg has expanded his international real estate holdings with the acquisition of a historic Gothic-style castle in southeastern Ireland. Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, purchased the property from the family of financier Michael Alen-Buckley in recent weeks, according to reporting by the Irish Times.
The multi-million-dollar purchase adds to a sprawling global real estate portfolio valued at over $450 million.
Architectural History and the River Blackwater Estate
Strancally Castle sits atop land overlooking the River Blackwater in County Waterford. The three-story, cut-stone structure was constructed around 1830 for John Keily, a former English Tory politician, from designs drafted by the renowned architects James and George Richard Pain. The estate grounds span approximately 440 acres, featuring extensive riverfront acreage.
Previous owners, the Alen-Buckley family, carried out an extensive renovation of the historic property over the preceding 25 years. A previous major overhaul was also recorded in architectural archive records from 2003. The acquisition serves a strategic geographic purpose alongside its historical appeal. The estate sits roughly 125 miles south-west of Meta’s international headquarters in Dublin, where many American tech giants maintain European operations to capitalize on the country’s corporate tax policies. Meta employs approximately 1,500 people in Ireland, maintaining both its primary EU hub and a regional data center outside Dublin, alongside virtual and augmented reality operations based in Cork.
Despite acquiring the Irish estate, Zuckerberg and his family will maintain their primary residence in Palo Alto, California, utilizing the Strancally property during international travel and business trips. Brian Baker, a spokesman for Zuckerberg, confirmed the acquisition details to reporters.
Centuries of Local Lore along the River
Beyond its nineteenth-century Gothic architecture, the broader area carries a far darker historical narrative. The original medieval fortifications of Strancally date back to the 12th century, founded by the Norman conqueror Raymond le Gros roughly 4.5 kilometers from the current Victorian structure. Francis Grose’s 1791 historical work, The Antiquities of Ireland, documented that the early river citadel was used as a prison by the Earls of Desmond. According to historical accounts in the text, prisoners held within the cliffside fortress were cast through an opening cut into the rock in the manner of a portcullis gate grille directly into the rushing waters of the river below.
While the original medieval stronghold features a grim penal history, the newly acquired 1830s residence provides modern estate grounds, including a swimming pool and croquet lawns, positioning the property for private family use alongside its neighboring historic landmarks like Ballynatray House—which was purchased in 2024 by British business magnate James Dyson for approximately $34 million.
