Matthew McConaughey was at a urinal during the 2026 Emmy Awards while comforting an emotional Jimmy Kimmel, according to Woody Harrelson. Harrelson recounted the bizarre backstage encounter during a joint promotional appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday night.
On Monday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, the late-night host kicked things off by throwing jabs at his favorite punching bag, President Trump, over his recent visit with Zohran Mamdani and how smitten the president appears to be with the mayor, as well as his authoritarian decision to ban CNN, MS Now and Politico from White House access. But the real eye-opener came during his interview with Woody Harrelson. After Harrelson — who is promoting his Apple TV series Brothers with good pal and possible half-brother Matthew McConaughey — gifted Kimmel a gigantic joint from his West Hollywood cannabis lounge and dispensary The Woods, the comedian proceeded to share an outrageous story involving McConaughey, Harrelson and himself that went down at the recent Emmys. The show is set to premiere via Apple TV on Wednesday.
An Emotional In Memoriam Segment Leads to the Restroom
The bizarre encounter began during the annual awards ceremony on 14 September. Host Jimmy described how he became emotional amid the In Memoriam segment where his late friend and long-time bandleader, Cleto Escobedo III, was honoured. My friend Cleto passed away and it was in the montage, and I started getting choked up and I went to the bathroom, he recalled.
Seeking a quiet moment to collect himself, the host walked into the restroom. I’m washing my hands and I notice next to me – I mean, right next to me – Matthew McConaughey is at the urinal, the 58-year-old continued.
Matthew McConaughey’s Unorthodox Bathroom Comfort
Standing right beside Kimmel at the adjacent urinal was McConaughey. According to Kimmel’s recounting on the show, the Oscar-winning actor immediately noticed that something was wrong.
He’s like, ‘Hey, you OK?’ And I told him what happened and he is again at the urinal, and he turns to me and he gives me a very nice hug – he hugs me very warmly – and I am hugging him for a little while, and I said, ‘Is your penis out?’ And he said, ‘Yes it is.’

And he says, ‘In fact, I’m going to rub it up against you a little bit,’ Kimmel continued. The unexpected embrace provided a surreal layer of comfort during an otherwise devastating moment for the late-night host. Rather than taking offense at the exposure, Kimmel insisted that he was fine with the 56-year-old’s behaviour.
Woody Harrelson Emerges From the Stalls
Adding another layer to the already bizarre story, Harrelson was inside the same restroom occupying one of the stalls when the encounter took place. And just at that moment, Woody exited one of the stalls in the bathroom.
Harrelson noted that he heard Kimmel talking about being upset while inside the stall. I never try to grade or critique what other people are doing, and I figured you guys, whatever your thing is, I didn’t want to be the guy to say, ‘No, not in the restroom at the Emmys!’ the former Cheers star smiled. But I did hear you say that you were upset and that’s why afterwards we were all out in the hall and had a group hug. I’m sorry to hear about that. To conclude, Jimmy insisted that he was fine with the behaviour, adding that it did lighten the moment considerably and Cleto would have loved that very much. Woody, 65, and Matthew are currently promoting the new comedy series, Brothers.
