Right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos is being held in immigration detention by U.S. authorities after officials determined he overstayed his 2019 legal entry. The arrest in Louisiana follows a July deportation order issued after he missed a mandatory immigration hearing.
The U.S. Federal authorities confirmed that the former media personality entered the United States legally in 2019, but failed to maintain valid authorization as his permitted stay expired.
Airport Arrest and Immigration Status in Louisiana
Federal officials detained Yiannopoulos on a Thursday evening in Louisiana. Why the Brite was in Louisiana was unclear, though his former employer Ye, also known as Kanye West, performed on Friday in the Caesars Superdome.
The agency indicated that detention is not mandatory for individuals willing to depart voluntarily.
Recent Calls for Hardline Border Enforcement
Prior to his arrest, the right-wing figure strongly supported mass deportations and harsh enforcement measures implemented under federal immigration directives.
Writing on social media last year, he advocated for severe checkpoints across public infrastructure. Specifically, he demanded ICE checkpoints at the entrances of supermarkets, gas stations, shopping centers, intersections, and government buildings in California.

Political Background and Prior Associations
Before his legal troubles and shifting political alignments, Yiannopoulos (41), who also used the alias «@nero», gained prominence as a high-profile provocateur during the 2016 American presidential election cycle, where he publicly championed Donald Trump’s campaign and called Trump “Daddy”. His career included a stint as an editor for the right-wing portal Breitbart, where he made waves against feminism and Islam. Steve Bannon, Trump’s later chief adviser, had employed Yiannopoulos in his then-role as Breitbart editor.
In 2016, Twitter threw him out after a harassment campaign against black comedian Leslie Jones. A year later, everything collapsed when a video surfaced in which he appeared to defend sexual relationships between adult men and 13-year-old boys. The conservative conference CPAC uninvited him, his book contract fell through, and he lost Breitbart. Facebook banned him in 2019, and Australia barred him from entering the country following his statements on the Christchurch mosque shooting.
Over subsequent years, his public profile experienced a series of shifts and controversies, including a comeback where he declared himself an “ex-homosexualand told podcaster Tucker Carlson of his greatest regret in ever making homosexuality respectable among Republicans. same-sex attraction,” calling himself a retired civil rights icon. Subsequently, he served as chief of staff for Kanye West’s 2024 presidential campaign and label Yeezy, stating he was the one who had white nationalist Nick Fuentes join Ye for dinner with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in 2022. He declared his resignation in 2024 because Ye planned a pornographic division, stating as a recovering addict

Conflicting Claims Over the Federal Arrest
Following the news of the detention, right-wing influencer Laura Loomer—a former ally with a direct line to Trump who later had a public falling-out with Yiannopoulos—claimed public credit for instigating the federal investigation. In December, Loomer had written that Yiannopoulos was staying illegally in the country and sleeping sometimes at Marjorie Taylor Greene’s and sometimes at podcaster Candace Owens’s place.
Loomer stated on social media that she had reported Yiannopoulos to both immigration authorities and the Federal Bureau of Investigation after he called for her murder. Federal law enforcement agencies have not independently verified whether Loomer’s complaints played any direct role in triggering the Louisiana airport arrest. Yiannopoulos remains in immigration custody pending the execution of his removal proceedings.
