MTG-I2 satellite launches on Ariane 6, completing Europe’s new weather constellation

The European Space Agency successfully launched the MTG-I2 weather satellite aboard an Ariane 6 rocket from Kourou, French Guiana, on August 27, 2026. The mission marks the rocket’s first geostationary transfer orbit flight and completes the initial three-spacecraft Meteosat Third Generation constellation for high-resolution meteorological forecasting across Europe.

Weighing 3.8 tons at launch, the spacecraft represents the final piece of the initial trio in the Meteosat Third Generation program. It joins its companion satellites in geostationary orbit: the MTG-I1 imager launched in December 2022, and the MTG-S1 sounder launched in July 2025.

Ariane 6 Achieves First Geostationary Transfer Orbit Mission

The flight marked the ninth overall mission for the Ariane 6 rocket since its debut in July 2024, and its fourth launch of 2026 following three separate missions dedicated to deploying Amazon broadband satellites. Crucially, it was the first time the European heavy-lift rocket delivered a payload to a geostationary transfer orbit, flying in a configuration equipped with two P120C solid-fuel boosters.

While the rocket’s predecessor, the Ariane 5, frequently handled geostationary missions, shifts in satellite demand toward low Earth orbit constellations had steered recent launch schedules. Eumetsat had previously adjusted launch arrangements for the MTG-S1 sounder, moving it to a Falcon 9 rocket in 2024 due to development delays, describing that decision as driven by exceptional circumstances before reaffirming its long-term reliance on European launchers.

High-Resolution Observations and the Weather Cube

Operating from 9 degrees east in geostationary orbit roughly 36,000 kilometers above Earth, the MTG-I2 spacecraft carries an advanced Flexible Combined Imager designed to transform short-term weather forecasting. While the earlier MTG-I1 satellite captures a full-disk image of the planet every 10 minutes, MTG-I2 will focus on Europe and North Africa, delivering high-resolution observations every 2.5 minutes.

Forecasters will use the rapid-scan service to track atmospheric fronts in real time, improve early detection of fast-developing severe storms, anticipate DANA events, and monitor wildfires, fog, and air pollution. The satellite also features a Lightning Imager capable of mapping individual lightning discharges day and night. Integrating these instruments allows scientists to construct a three-dimensional representation of wind, cloud dynamics, greenhouse gases, and lightning known as the weather cube.

Orbital Insertion and Commissioning Timeline

Following separation from the upper stage, ground teams established contact with the spacecraft to oversee the deployment of its solar panels and the gradual ignition of its propulsion system. According to James Champion, MTG project manager at the European Space Agency, the spacecraft requires 10 to 12 days to reach its final operational slot in geostationary orbit from its transfer orbit.

Once the Launch and Early Orbit Phase concludes and the satellite is repointed toward Earth, the extensive commissioning and calibration phase begins. Susanne Dieterle, MTG system manager at Eumetsat, noted that while the initial MTG-I1 satellite required four months to deliver its first image, mission teams intend to complete the process more quickly with MTG-I2 due to the identical design of the hardware.

Future Constellation Expansion

With the successful deployment of MTG-I2, the initial Meteosat Third Generation trio is complete. Development of the family was led by the European Space Agency alongside an industrial consortium headed by Thales Alenia Space, with support from OHB System and Leonardo. Responsibility for operating the fleet and distributing observational data will transition to Eumetsat once calibration concludes.

Looking ahead, a second set of three satellites is currently being manufactured to be placed into storage. Those spacecraft are scheduled to launch around the mid-2030s to ensure continuity of meteorological observations beyond 2040, maintaining coverage that originally began with the Meteosat Second Generation series operating between 2002 and 2015.
