NASA and SpaceX are targeting August 30, 2026, for the launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope aboard a Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center. Mission leaders cleared the observatory following a Flight Readiness Review, setting up a five-year mission designed to survey wide swaths of the cosmos and investigate dark energy.
NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has passed an important milestone ahead of its upcoming flight to space. Mission leaders from NASA, the Roman team, and SpaceX gathered at Kennedy Space Center in Florida for a formal Flight Readiness Review to evaluate the spacecraft, rocket, and launch site preparations.
Following that assessment, managers cleared the observatory to move into final launch operations. NASA and SpaceX are targeting liftoff no earlier than 7:26 a.m. EDT on Sunday, August 30, 2026. The observatory will ride into space aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A.
Falcon Heavy Preparation and Launch Logistics
The Falcon Heavy stands as one of SpaceX’s most powerful launch vehicles, utilizing three connected rocket boosters to provide the thrust necessary for heavy payloads. Technicians have enclosed the Roman observatory inside the rocket’s protective fairing, the shell designed to shield spacecraft from aerodynamic forces and the atmosphere during ascent. Crews planned to move the encapsulated observatory to the SpaceX hangar at pad 39A before rolling the assembled vehicle out to the launch pad.
Once aloft, the coach-sized observatory will head to an orbit approximately one million miles from Earth, providing an unimpeded, sweeping view of the cosmos according to reporting from the Independent. From that vantage point, the telescope will downlink roughly 1.4 terabytes of data daily to ground stations located in New Mexico, Australia, and Japan.
Revolutionary Surveys and Cosmic Mysteries
Named after NASA’s first chief astronomer, the Roman Space Telescope is built to capture images of space at least 100 times larger than the existing Hubble Space Telescope. Over its five-year primary mission, it is expected to carry out surveys that would take Hubble hundreds or thousands of years to complete.

In addition to conducting a statistical census of planetary systems in our galaxy, the observatory aims to help researchers untangle the riddle of dark energy and explain why the expansion of the universe is accelerating over time. Scientists also plan to use the telescope to study how the universe has evolved since its earliest days.
Wide Field Instrument and Coronagraph Technology
The observatory carries two primary instruments designed to tackle distinct observational goals.

The second instrument, a Coronagraph Instrument technology demonstration, aims to test new hardware for directly imaging planets around other stars.
