Nonprofit Plans 80,000-Year Spacecraft Mission To Alpha Centauri

The Redmond-based nonprofit Fermi Explorer Mission announced plans on September 2, 2026, to launch a small spacecraft toward the Alpha Centauri star system by 2029. Operating on a budget under $15 million, the 80,000-year mission uses existing electric propulsion to test solutions to the Fermi paradox.

Humanity has never deliberately aimed a spacecraft at another star. While NASA’s Voyager probes drifted past the outer planets on their way into interstellar space, no mission has ever targeted a specific stellar neighbor. That approach is set to change under a project announced by a group of space entrepreneurs who also co-founded the space data center startup Starcloud, according to Ars Technica.

The nonprofit Fermi Explorer Mission is led by mathematician and physicist Philip Johnston alongside fellow Starcloud co-founders Ezra Feilden and Adi Oltean, as reported by BigGo. The project is designed to address the Fermi paradox, the enduring scientific question asking why humanity has found no evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations despite the trillion planets estimated within the Local Group. Organizers point to two primary filters: either species refuse to leave their home stars, or interstellar transit is considered too difficult.

That initiative required billions in unbuilt laser-propulsion research and collapsed in 2025, according to BigGo. By contrast, Fermi Explorer deliberately embraces an 80,000-year cruise duration, relying on proven off-the-shelf electric propulsion and rideshare rocket launches.

Spacecraft Specifications and Mission Budget Economics

The spacecraft will carry a payload weighing at least 2.2 pounds (1 kilogram), housed within a 10-centimeter-square format, according to BigGo. The entire vehicle will weigh between 220 and 440 pounds (100 and 200 kilograms) on Earth, as noted by Yahoo. The total mission cost will remain under $15 million, fitting within budget limits offered by leading satellite manufacturers, according to DEV.

To fund construction and engage the public, the nonprofit established a multi-tiered contribution model similar to the Voyager Golden Record. Supporters can purchase entry levels ranging from $10 for naming recognition on the mission website to $1 million for a 3-by-3-by-3-centimeter container holding gemstones or biological artifacts, as outlined by DEV. Intermediate tiers allow donors to engrave initials, full names, or a 2-by-2-centimeter photograph directly onto the probe.
