NVIDIA Confirms DLSS 5 Is Coming to GeForce RTX 40 Series

NVIDIA has officially confirmed that DLSS 5 will expand to GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards, reversing its initial stance. The rollout will begin after engineers finish optimizing performance for the new Blackwell-based RTX 50 series, with NVIDIA targeting model updates this fall before launching the Ada Lovelace enablement.

The tech giant’s neural rendering technology is officially landing on previous-generation hardware. Initially positioned as an exclusive feature for the GeForce RTX 50 family upon its debut in NBA 2K27, NVIDIA confirmed that official GeForce RTX 40 support is planned. The update arrives after experimental work by modders demonstrated that the hardware restrictions were largely artificial.

Performance Optimization Prerequisite for RTX 40 Series

Owners of Ada Lovelace cards will have to wait until engineers finish fine-tuning the architecture. NVIDIA explained that its immediate priority is improving performance on current hardware, noting that once RTX 50 Series performance is more fully tuned, the company will shift development focus to bringing the tech to the RTX 40 lineup.

Independent testing underscores why that optimization remains necessary. Independent hardware benchmarks found that an RTX 5070 lost more than half its performance at 1440p when neural rendering was enabled, illustrating a substantial fixed rendering cost that lower-tier cards struggle to absorb.

The policy shift follows weeks of intense tinkering by independent developers. Prior to the official launch of NBA 2K27 on September 3, modders extracted a DLSSNR DLL file from an early access build and successfully injected the technology into titles like Control. Those experimental files proved that Ada Lovelace hardware could run the neural rendering model at playable frame rates, while older Ampere and Turing architectures suffered from severe instability and exceptionally low frame performance.

Gamers and tech influencers tested the patched files extensively across a wide array of titles. Some developers even created custom utilities like the DLSS 5 Swapper tool to mod DLSS 5 into games that don’t support DLSS at all. These unofficial implementations revealed a level of user-facing control that NVIDIA’s official driver branch keeps tightly restricted.

Granular Controls Remain Locked for Developers

While modders enjoyed open access to various adjustments, official consumers will experience a much more streamlined interface. NVIDIA confirmed that the consumer implementation will operate primarily as a simple on/off switch. Advanced adjustments such as structural intensity, tone intensity, masking, and model selection are intended for developers to prevent modifications that might disrupt intended artistic aesthetics.
