Odegaard and Havertz star – player ratings for Arsenal v Chelsea

Arsenal claimed a 2-1 victory over Chelsea in the Premier League after overcoming an early setback at the Emirates. Morgan Rogers struck inside two minutes for the visitors before Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard secured the home win with goals that left both sides trading tactical blows.

Early Setback and Opening Exchanges at the Emirates

Chelsea made a lightning start when Morgan Rogers opened the scoring with a first-time volley just outside the area after two minutes, catching goalkeeper David Raya wrong-footed at his near post in the second phase of a set piece. The early momentum brought growing dread to the hosts as Arsenal worked to wrest back control.

Early defensive scrambles included an accidental collision involving Emiliano Martínez when the Argentina goalkeeper was accidentally kicked in the head by Gabriel early on, with no caution issued for the flailing leg while down on the ground. Arsenal thought they had equalised shortly after the opener through a scrambled effort, but that goal was ruled out for an offside.

Pedro Neto carried a consistent threat on the wing while tasked with marking Calafiori, hitting the post just before half-time with a brilliant curling effort. Reece James provided stability as a passer—earning recognition as arguably Chelsea’s best passer—and saw a well-struck long-range effort saved after 22 minutes. Romeo Lavia also contributed with a superb defensive header to clear the danger in the 32nd minute while competing aggressively throughout the first half. Jorrel Hato displayed determination that helped create Rogers’ volley, while Wesley Fofana proved to be the most composed of Chelsea’s defenders in possession despite facing difficult defensive duels against Saka, Ødegaard, and Havertz.

Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard Turn the Match Around

Arsenal’s sustained pressure eventually yielded an equaliser before the break. Kai Havertz fired a shot from just outside the area that went between a defender’s legs and caught Martínez wrong-footed, squirming in at the near post much like Chelsea’s opener, though Martínez was later forced to make a high-quality save from Saka in the second half. Maxence Lacroix had earlier miscontrolled a ball that allowed Havertz’s shot to pass through his legs, though he impressed at other times during the match.

The second half saw the home side emerge with renewed energy. Brilliant combination play between Havertz and Martin Ødegaard allowed the latter to arrive unmarked in the middle of the box and hammer home with emphasis to give Arsenal a 2-1 lead.

As Arsenal established their advantage, they shifted into a deeper defensive block, frustrating Chelsea’s attempts to find a breakthrough as the match settled into a harder-to-break-down structure.

Late Substitutions and Final Push

Around the hour mark, tactical changes injected fresh urgency into Chelsea’s approach as the team sought an equaliser against a retreating Arsenal side. Malo Gusto entered on 60 minutes for Lavia and Pep Chavarria replaced Hato at the same time, though Gusto put in a poor effort playing out of position in central midfield moments after coming on and failed to hit the target from an open shot, while Chavarria occasionally struggled to track his runners.

Cole Palmer was largely kept quiet by Arsenal’s disciplined setup, though he managed a first-half effort on target, had a second-half shot saved, and was booked for a professional foul. Morgan Rogers also curled an effort narrowly wide in the 31st minute and later hammered over from range before being substituted for Danny Welbeck in the 87th minute. Late substitute Estêvão Willian—who came on for Neto in the 80th minute—nearly salvaged a point when his sensational curling effort near the end was gathered safely by Raya instead of dipping into the top corner.
