The violence broke out just after 7:30 p.m. near Eddy Street and Angela Boulevard after police and university personnel shut down tailgating activities for the football game against Michigan State University. A physical altercation flared up near the intersection, leading to at least one gunshot. A female civilian and a police officer were struck. Authorities later confirmed that the injured officer was hit by either shrapnel or a ricochet. A third individual sustained injuries during the physical struggle, though not from gunfire. According to police, that injury probably happened during the fight.
Emergency Response, Stadium Lockdowns, and Campus Safety Status
An ND Alert issued on Saturday, Sep. 19, instructed individuals inside Notre Dame Stadium to remain inside the stadium while others on campus were told to shelter in place. The emergency alert system warned that a suspect had been last seen along the southern edge of campus as police searched the area. Law enforcement cleared parking garages, businesses, and commercial spaces throughout the Eddy Street Commons area.
