An Ohio mother whose 16 children were rescued from a decrepit family home pleaded not guilty in court on Wednesday to multiple charges, including child endangerment and neglect, as reported by The Guardian. Elizabeth Siders, 34, appeared in Vinton County court dressed in an orange jumpsuit for her arraignment, where she cradled and shielded her stomach, according to Fox News.
Arraignment and Not Guilty Pleas in Ohio Court
Siders pleaded not guilty to 19 counts of child endangerment and neglect concerning her children. Additionally, she pleaded not guilty in a separate case to two charges each of sexual battery and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, according to Nbcnews. During the court appearance, a judge deemed Siders a flight risk and increased her total bond by raising the child endangerment portion from $250,000 to $550,000. She was also ordered to have no contact with her children, her husband, or the minor victim involved in the separate case.
Investigation and Squalid Living Conditions
Authorities initially uncovered the situation in July during a search of a small home in the village of Hamden while conducting a child sexual abuse investigation. Investigators reported finding 16 children, ranging in age from 17 months to 18 years old, living in horrific and deplorable conditions inside a home littered with human waste.
According to authorities, the children appeared almost feral after being confined to a single 12ft-by-12ft room for much of the past four years. The children did not attend school, and some were unable to speak at all, while the eldest was developmentally disabled and unable to spell her name. The rescued children were placed in state custody.
Family Indictments and Competency Requests
Elizabeth Siders is one of four family members charged in connection with the case. Her husband, Gary Siders Jr., and her in-laws, Gary Siders Sr. and Christina Siders, also faced charges. Gary Siders Jr. previously pleaded not guilty to charges against him but was found incompetent to stand trial, while Gary Siders Sr. was likewise found incompetent to stand trial. Competency evaluation requests have been filed for Elizabeth Siders, Gary Siders Jr., and Christina Siders.
In the separate sexual abuse case, Elizabeth Siders and her husband were indicted on August 21 for alleged abuse against a minor between the ages of 13 and 16 who was in their care in 2022. The victim was not one of the couple’s 16 children. Birth records show Elizabeth Siders gave birth to a child in February 2022 and gave birth prematurely to twins in November 2022 who died shortly after birth.
Defense Arguments and Mental Health Concerns
Defense attorney Thomas Stolly informed the court that his client still asks to see her children and questioned whether Siders herself is a victim. Stolly noted that she was married at age 15, has essentially been pregnant for the better part of two decades without going through proper postpartum periods, and never received regular medical care appropriate for someone who has had 16 or 18 children.
Stolly expressed concern regarding the effects of those circumstances and her environment within the household. A competency evaluation requested by the defense remains pending to determine the next steps in the legal proceedings.
