Goaltender Frederik Andersen is set to miss the Edmonton Oilers’ upcoming training camp and the early portion of the 2026-27 season due to a lingering knee injury. General manager Stan Bowman announced the roster update alongside news regarding injured forward Matt Savoie and defenceman Alec Regula.
Frederik Andersen Sidelined by Lingering Knee Injury
When the Edmonton Oilers open training camp next month, newly signed goaltender Frederik Andersen will not be on the ice. Oilers general manager Stan Bowman spoke with Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer to clarify that the ailment stems from a tweaked knee.
It’s not a new injury,” he said of goaltender Frederik Andersen’s ailment that will keep him out of training camp, and the early part of the season. “I think it’s a situation where sometimes with these things, you’re hoping that you don’t need any type of procedure.
“And sometimes, there’s a lot of injuries in hockey where you can take a conservative approach for a certain amount of time hoping that that’s enough.”

Andersen initially hoped that rest would resolve the issue after he signed a one-year, US$2.8-million contract with Edmonton on July 1. The 36-year-old from Herning, Denmark, arrived in Edmonton after backstopping the Carolina Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup title, posting a 13-2-0 record with a 1.89 goals-against average, a .913 save percentage, and three shutouts during that postseason run.
“Sometimes, when that isn’t enough, then you don’t wait forever for that to be the case,” added Bowman. “But I think that was part of our game plan going in, knowing that he is a bit older, and he’s had a few injuries before.”

Goalie Depth Tested Early With Tristan Jarry and Devon Levi
With Andersen facing an extended recovery window that surpasses winger Matt Savoie’s timeline, Edmonton management stated they do not intend to bring in additional goaltenders to the organization at this time. Instead, the franchise will lean on veteran Tristan Jarry and prospect Devon Levi, providing both players with a great opportunity starting the year.
“We weren’t expecting him to carry the big load all year. So we have (Tristan) Jarry and we have Devon Levi as well. They’re both gonna be guys getting a great opportunity here starting the year.”

Matt Savoie and Training Camp Health Updates
Alongside Andersen, the Oilers announced Wednesday that Andersen, along with defenceman Alec Regula and forwards Mattias Janmark and Matt Savoie, are dealing with injuries heading into the 2026-27 season. Janmark underwent surgery in March for a chronic undisclosed injury, and is recovering from a medical procedure performed after last season.

Forward Matt Savoie joins Andersen on the injured list after picking up an injury during off-season training sessions. While outside reports have suggested a late October return for the winger, team leadership remains cautious about setting a strict calendar.

Bowman noted that Savoie remains in the beginning stages of rehabilitation and is not yet skating or doing anything, making it difficult to predict whether his recovery will run ahead of or behind initial expectations.
(He’s in) the beginning stages now,” said Bowman. “He’s not skating or anything, so I always like to be cautious not to make predictions.
“I’m not a doctor, first of all, and then you don’t really know until they get into their sort of rehab skating portion to see if they’re on track, ahead of schedule, a little bit behind — but no, this is not something that’s gonna sideline him for weeks and weeks.”
