Peter Byrne, lead singer and co-founder of the British synth-pop band Naked Eyes, died in Los Angeles on Sept. 14, 2026, at age 74 following a brief illness. He helped define the polished 1980s new wave sound with hits like Always Something There to Remind Me.
Rise of Naked Eyes and the 1980s Synth-Pop Sound
Born in Islington, North London, Byrne built his musical roots through early projects in Bath, England, including a stint in the band Neon from 1979 to 1982 alongside keyboardist Rob Fisher and future Tears for Fears members Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal. In 1982, Byrne and Fisher formed Naked Eyes and signed with EMI Records.
The duo traveled to Abbey Road Studios to record their debut album with producer Tony Mansfield. Released as Burning Bridges in the UK and simply as Naked Eyes in the United States, the 1983 record combined original tracks with a distinctive synth-pop rearrangement of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s 1963 song Always Something There to Remind Me.
Chart Success Without a Traditional Touring Cycle
The band’s breakout cover reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983, anchoring a run of four US Top 40 singles that also included Promises, Promises
at No. 11, When the Lights Go Out
at No. 37, and (What) In the Name of Love at No. 39.
Despite enjoying substantial radio airplay, the original lineup never mounted a traditional tour during its initial active window from 1982 to 1984. The heavily programmed studio arrangements presented technical hurdles that the duo could not easily replicate with a standard road band at the time, leading Byrne and Fisher to disband following the underperformance of their second album, Fuel for the Fire.
Solo Work, Later Revivals, and Lasting Legacy
Following Fisher’s death in 1999, Byrne sustained his career through solo releases and soundtrack work, contributing backing vocals to Stevie Wonder’s 1985 hit Part-Time Lover and writing music for television, film, and the Olsen twins.
The band’s website announced that he passed away peacefully according to Yahoo.
Byrne is survived by his siblings Eileen, Sandy, Carol, and Steve; his three children, Merlin, Dylan, and Chloe; and his ex-wife, Elena. His family has planned a private memorial service.
