Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a one-hour telephone conversation to discuss the Ukraine war, following a weekend diplomatic mission to Moscow and Kyiv by US envoys. Putin asserted that Russia has no aggressive plans toward Europe while offering an analysis of battlefield operations.
The conversation between the two leaders followed a diplomatic push led by US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who traveled to Moscow and for the first time since the war began also visited Kyiv over the weekend to speak with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj about ways to bring an end to the Ukraine conflict. The diplomatic outreach aims to address the ongoing war that Russia has waged against its neighbor Ukraine since February 2022, with Washington having made long-standing efforts to achieve a peace settlement between the two warring parties.
Diplomatic Envoys Visit Capitals Before Leaders Speak
The weekend travel by high-level US representatives marked a renewed push to address the conflict, following previous communications such as a July 4 phone call between Putin and Trump on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of American independence. Moscow has thus far made no moves to back down from its maximalist demands, which include territorial cessions by Ukraine in the east, encompassing regions that Russian troops have not yet captured.
Despite these entrenched positions, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskow expressed confidence to Indian journalists ahead of a Brics summit, stating, We are convinced that victory is very near. Peskow asserted that Moscow is confident in its military potential and soldiers, claiming that combat operations are proceeding very successfully, while noting that the Kremlin welcomes Donald Trump’s efforts and expects the resumption of talks in the format of Moscow, Washington, and Kyiv.
Moscow Denies European Threat and Discusses Bilateral Ties
During the one-hour phone call, which Putin’s foreign policy adviser Juri Uschakow described to media representatives as having taken place in a professional and respectful way while being constructive and extremely open, Putin assured Trump that Russia harbors no aggressive plans
regarding the European continent despite conflicting “speculations.” Uschakow stated that Putin provided an objective and detailed analysis of front-line developments in Ukraine and explained what Americans could do to bring the fighting to a rapid end, though the Kremlin adviser did not elaborate further on those specifics.
According to Uschakow, Trump emphasized his desire for a swift end to the war, which would also enable the complete restoration of relations between the US and Russia, primarily through trade and economic ties, noting that Donald Trump is very keen for a breakthrough to be achieved during his term. The two leaders also discussed further exchanges of prisoners. Trump did not issue an immediate statement regarding the conversation.
European Security Debates and Regional Attacks
Addressing accusations regarding alleged sabotage campaigns against European supporters of Ukraine—such as an incident at the Leipzig/Halle airport in Germany where a drone loaded with explosives was found between cargo planes and blamed on Russia by the German federal government—Uschakow dismissed the allegations, stating that The myths that are spread about the Russian threat serve as a pretext for Europeans to step up their support for Ukraine and their own military spending. This comes as Germany experiences a military build-up, with perceptions of the threat level leading the government to invest significantly more money in armaments next year while cutting back on social spending. Within this defense context, Pistorius announced the decision to supply urgently needed PAC-2 interceptor missiles from Bundeswehr stocks to Ukraine, alongside plans to further increase deliveries of air-to-air missiles.
Meanwhile, the conflict on the ground continues with severe violence. Following a three-day pause in attacks, fresh Russian missile strikes on Kyiv resulted in at least two deaths and seven injuries during the initial attacks on the city, as reported by Kyiv’s military administration on Telegram, causing damage to buildings across the capital including a five-story residential building in the Solomjanskyj district. Additionally, attacks targeted Ukrainian railways on the same day; according to the company, a regional train’s conductor between Dnipro and Zaporizhzhya was killed after returning to the vehicle following an ordered evacuation, while railway chief Olexander Perzowskyj reported that another train in the northern Ukrainian border region of Sumy was attacked, resulting in a safety stop, evacuation, and passengers sustaining shrapnel injuries.
