Meeting in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek on September 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held their first face-to-face discussions since military strikes against Iran began in February. Putin assured his Iranian counterpart of Moscow’s backing amidst difficult circumstances brought on by U.S. military operations, telling Tass and other reporting outlets that Russia is actively supplying necessary goods and maintaining solidarity with the Iranian public.

During an August 31 meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Iranian leader emphasized that the continuation of Middle Eastern hostilities serves neither national nor regional interests. Pezeshkian also used social media to note a brief exchange with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the gathering.

Washington has tightened economic sanctions on Tehran amid frustration over stalled negotiations to end the ongoing military conflict.
