Former England footballer Raheem Sterling pleaded guilty on Tuesday at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court to dangerous driving on a motorway and possession of nitrous oxide canisters following a May crash. The 31-year-old admitted driving a Lamborghini Urus dangerously on the M25, M3, and A327 before colliding with barriers.
Former England international Raheem Sterling appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where he admitted to a series of driving and drug-related offenses stemming from a late-spring collision.
The May Motorway Crash and Charges
The legal proceedings follow a single-vehicle collision that occurred on May 28. According to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary statements, Sterling crashed a Lamborghini into motorway barriers and a metal gate on the M3 southbound near the Minley interchange.
Police confirmed that no other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported
during the incident. Following the collision, authorities arrested the footballer, and he was subsequently charged in August.
In court, Sterling formally pleaded guilty to driving his Lamborghini Urus dangerously across the M25, the M3, and the A327. Alongside the dangerous driving charge, he admitted to possessing six nitrous oxide canisters—classified as a class C drug—for wrongful inhalation, and failing to provide a breath specimen for analysis.
Career Background and Recent Status
Sterling earned 82 appearances and scored 20 goals for England, helping guide the national team to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the final of Euro 2020 under manager Gareth Southgate.
His club career spans several major English teams. After coming through the academy at QPR, he made his senior debut with Liverpool before transferring to Manchester City in 2015. During his tenure with City, he collected four Premier League titles, five League Cups, and the FA Cup in 2019.
Sterling later moved to Chelsea in 2022. After falling out of favor at Stamford Bridge, he spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Arsenal. Following his departure from Chelsea earlier this year, he completed a short-term stint with Dutch club Feyenoord through the end of the 2025-26 season. He remains without a club.
Beyond his athletic record, Sterling received an MBE in the 2021 Queen’s birthday honors for services to racial equality in sport, recognizing his public campaigns against discrimination on and off the pitch.
