Former England Test captain Ben Stokes has signed a one-year deal with the Adelaide Strikers for the 2026-27 Big Bash League season. Available for the entire tournament after retiring from international cricket in June, the 35-year-old all-rounder returns to Australia’s premier T20 competition for the first time in 12 years.

The move marks Stokes’ first overseas T20 franchise stint in three years and brings him back to Australia less than a year after his international career concluded.

The South Australian Cricket Association worked for an extended period to land the high-profile all-rounder. Simon Insley, General Manager of Cricket at SACA, led the discussions according to Cricbuzz reporting. The Strikers faced heavy competition from rival franchises, with the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Renegades also pursuing the signature of the 35-year-old star.
Ultimately, Stokes chose Adelaide, drawn by a strong affinity for the Adelaide Oval and the city itself. SACA sources indicated that the player is fully committed to donning the blue for the Strikers throughout the winter schedule.
Financial terms place Stokes among the highest-paid overseas players in league history. Reporting from 7News indicates his one-year contract is in the region of AU$500,000 (US$360,000 approx.), pushing well past the previous platinum-level draft maximum of AU$420,000 under the BBL’s direct-signing contracting model.
Reuniting with Tim Paine at Adelaide Oval
Stokes will be coached by former Australian Test captain Tim Paine, who led the Australian side during the 2019 Ashes series when Stokes struck at Headingley. Now leading the Strikers from the coaching helm, Paine expressed high enthusiasm for his new recruit.

The 2026-27 Big Bash season opens on December 16, 2025, with Stokes and the Strikers facing the Sydney Thunder in Canberra, followed by his first home appearance at Adelaide Oval on December 23 in the return fixture against the Thunder.
Stokes last appeared in the tournament during the 2014-15 season, playing a four-match stint with the Melbourne Renegades. His post-international career has seen strong domestic form for Durham in the County Championship, where he averaged 63.60 with the bat.
