Swimmer dies in shark attack at Perth beach

Emergency authorities rushed to Sorrento Beach in Perth’s northern suburbs after receiving reports at 10:15 a.m. local time on Friday. Police confirmed that the male swimmer died as a result of the attack, with his remains subsequently found in the water during a joint search involving marine vessels and helicopters.

The incident unfolded roughly 50 meters offshore near a groyne bordering the Sorrento Surf Club, as beachgoers watched in horror. Witnesses described seeing a large pool of blood form on the surface after the victim was pulled below the water repeatedly. A shark up to six metres long was described by witnesses, and a shark believed to have attacked the swimmer has been repeatedly sighted more than a kilometre west of the Hillarys Boat Marina as authorities attempt to recover the man’s body. Boats and helicopters searched the ocean off Sorrento Beach in Perth’s northern suburbs after the late-morning attack, and lifesavers raced to rescue him but were unsuccessful in locating him.

Beach walker Jacqui Rapaic told reporters she was strolling along the shoreline with a companion when the attack occurred.

“My friend said, ‘Jac, I think there’s been a shark attack’ and I looked out to the ocean and I could see a pool of blood,” beach walker Jacqui Rapaic told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Ms. Rapaic added that she believed two men had been swimming together, but only one managed to return to shore. Another bystander’s account was captured by the Nine Network, detailing the immediate aftermath for the surviving companion.

“My friend said, ‘Jack, I think there’s been a shark attack’ and I looked out to the ocean and I could see a pool of blood,” she told the ABC.“I hugged onto my friend… [we] felt rather traumatised at that point. It happened so quickly.”

A witness to the attack, identified only as Darrel, told Nine Network television that the victim had been swimming with a now traumatized friend. I was just shocked. I mean, I feel for his mate. He's apologized and said 'I didn't save my mate,' Darrel told Nine. I said 'You couldn't have done anything,' Darrel added. Witness Ingrid Mitchell, who swims at the beach daily, said to Nine: How do you just watch someone be mauled to pieces in front of you, basically? It's pretty hard. A nurse who witnessed the incident told media she saw the swimmer being [attacked] in front of her, adding, I only live just down the road, and I swim every day. I mean, there’s no way I’m going to be getting in that water again.

City of Joondalup Closes Coastline as Fisheries Track Five-Meter Shark

Following the attack, the City of Joondalup closed all beaches in its jurisdiction. The closures affect nearly 12 kilometers of coastline from Marmion to Iluka until at least noon on Saturday.

Authorities deployed WA police, who have been patrolling the beach since, with officers earlier seen standing along the shoreline next to a red surfboard. Meanwhile, fisheries vessels and the Surf Life Saving helicopter tracked a large marine predator. 

An official report lodged with the state’s SharkSmart monitoring system noted a 5-metre-long shark reported to monitoring website SharkSmart at the nearby Boyinaboat reef just after noon on Friday, though authorities have not formally confirmed whether this specific animal was responsible for the fatality. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is investigating the incident.

The fatal incident is the second shark attack off WA’s coast in five days, following an incident earlier in the week involving a surfer bitten in the same state.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy and my thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones, as well as the first responders who attended the scene,” he said.
