Texmaco Rail and Engineering has secured a ₹5,300 crore contract to supply locomotives and freight rolling stock to South Africa, expanding its footprint abroad while driving a multi-thousand-crore manufacturing push in Bengal.
The company, part of the Saroj Poddar Group, initially announced a ₹4,100-crore deal in July, alongside plans to establish a local plant in South Africa. As additional orders flowed in, the cumulative contract value expanded.
Manufacturing Strategy Across Bengal and South Africa
Under the project roadmap, Texmaco will manufacture rolling stock and locomotive parts at its factories in Bengal, according to managing director Sudipta Mukherjee. The company plans to complete the locomotives through its partner Wabtec before shipping them to South Africa. At the same time, work on the overseas plant is moving forward rapidly.
Work to set up a South Africa plant is in full swing and will help maintain rolling stock supplied by us for 15 years according to contract. We are also in talks with local partners, including South African railways. Besides, rolling stock manufactured in Bengal can be assembled in the upcoming plant abroad.

The first-phase investment for the South African manufacturing and maintenance facility sits at approximately ₹300 crore and is expected to scale up gradually. Back home, Texmaco maintains a current manufacturing capacity of 14,000 wagons a year. Half of the rolling stock designated for the South Africa orders will ship during the 2027–28 financial year, with the remaining balance dispatched in subsequent phases.
Domestic Expansion and Diversification Plans
Beyond its export commitments, Texmaco is executing a broader business roadmap in Bengal to develop a passenger mobility ecosystem, railway wheels, and defence products. Mukherjee pegged total investments in the state at between ₹2,000 crore and ₹3,000 crore over the coming years.
The capital outlay supports several domestic initiatives, including an electronic complex planned at Belghoria. The company also intends to secure land in Bengal for Texmaco Defence System Pvt Ltd to produce protective systems and autonomous vehicles.
