Thai police arrested two men and launched a manhunt for two others after a 29-year-old Chinese woman escaped from a moving car during a police pursuit in Kamphaeng Phet province on Sunday night, August 23, following an alleged abduction from Bangkok.
The harrowing sequence of events began at approximately 9:00 PM on Sunday when the tourist, who was traveling through Bangkok en route to Singapore, was collected from her hotel by a black Nissan Teana. The woman believed she had arranged transportation with a legitimate tour guide through telephone communication, a contact she had never met in person.
The Bangkok Hotel Pickup and Subsequent Abduction
Shortly after leaving the hotel, the sedan stopped to collect three additional male suspects. As the vehicle filled, the tourist realized she had been deceived and attempted to resist and leave the car. The assailants quickly overpowered her, confiscated her mobile phone, restrained her wrists tightly with cable ties, and struck her in the mouth, causing an injury.
The group immediately drove north, charting a route toward the border district of Mae Sot in Tak province. Investigators believe the group intended to transport her toward the border.
Checkpoint Chase and Desperate Escape in Kamphaeng Phet
The operation unraveled later that evening when the vehicle approached a police checkpoint outside the Chula police box in central Kamphaeng Phet. Sensing a fleeting opportunity, the restrained woman screamed for assistance to the officers on duty. Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated through the police barricade.
As the sedan sped away, the victim used all her strength to force the rear door open and throw herself onto Ratchadamnoen Road while the vehicle was still in motion. Despite her injuries and bound hands, she ran to a nearby salon and commercial business near a traffic-light junction, hammering on the door until local residents and police officers responded to shelter her.
Tactical Pursuit, Tyre Shooting, and Suspect Arrests
Following the breach at the checkpoint, Pol Col Somkasem Charak, superintendent of Mueang Kamphaeng Phet Police Station, ordered patrol officers to pursue and intercept the fleeing Nissan. Police followed the vehicle toward Lan Dokmai subdistrict, where officers fired at one of its tyres to bring the vehicle to a halt, according to Pol Maj Chakkaphet Khrueacha, an inspector at the station.
The four suspects abandoned the immobilized sedan and fled on foot into woodland beside the road. Police apprehended two individuals: 41-year-old Somkiat Thakaeo and 24-year-old Kittiporn Winya, both residents of Mae Sot district. Two other suspects managed to escape into the surrounding area, though police confirmed one of the fugitives had been identified.
During preliminary interrogations led by police officials including Pol Lt Col Suwich Phit-on, deputy superintendent and the officer overseeing the case, Kittiporn claimed he was driving the car after being hired by Somkiat for a fee of 10,000 Thai Baht specifically to collect the tourist from the Bangkok hotel.
Following her rescue, the tourist was taken to Kamphaeng Phet Hospital for treatment and medical examinations before Tourist Police officers and a Chinese-language interpreter accompanied her to Mueang Kamphaeng Phet Police Station to give a formal statement. She is currently receiving medical treatment and psychological support under the protection of the Thai Tourist Police while authorities coordinate internationally to trace the digital communications of the bogus tour guide.
