Tony Romo addresses OWI arrest through spokesperson

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS analyst Tony Romo faces three new citations following a July 23 traffic stop in Milwaukee County, where police arrested him on suspicion of operating while intoxicated.

New Citations Filed in Milwaukee Following July Traffic Stop

Online court records show that Tony Romo faces three charges stemming from that arrest, including first-offense operating while intoxicated, unsafe passing on the right side, and possessing open intoxicants inside his vehicle. All three charges were filed on Thursday, Aug. 27. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office stopped the former NFL quarterback southbound on Interstate 43 on July 23 after a deputy observed him performing unsafe passing on the right and cutting across the gore.

Authorities reported that Romo performed poorly on SFSTs (standard field sobriety tests) during the stop. A deputy also discovered an open container in the passenger seat of Romo’s vehicle during the stop. Romo told the deputy he was in the area to participate in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf event in West Bend and that he was on his way to his grandparents’ house after the event concluded. Following the stop, he refused to take a breathalyzer test, leading to an additional citation given July 27 for refusing to take an intoxication test after his arrest. Traffic stop bodycam footage surfaced on July 28, showing Romo explaining his route to his grandparents’ house after visiting a nearby golf course where he played in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship.

Public Response and Representative Statement

More than a month after the arrest, Romo’s team broke their public silence. A spokesperson for Romo’s team issued a formal statement to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and TMZ addressing the legal situation.

“Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved. We are working with local authorities to bring this matter to a close and we are communicating with CBS about next steps.”

While it may be technically accurate under Wisconsin OWI laws to call a first offense a “civil matter,” he was pulled over, put through a field sobriety test, handcuffed, his mugshot was taken, and he was booked. Romo is due in court for all four citations Sept. 21, as confirmed by online court records.

Broadcasting Future at CBS Remains Uncertain

The legal fallout has directly impacted Romo’s broadcasting career. CBS placed Romo on leave until further notice. On Aug. 11, CBS Sports president David Berson said there’s no timetable for Romo’s return to the broadcast booth.

By all appearances, CBS has reconfigured its lineup not for a brief Romo absence but for a full season without him, making an abrupt return as of, say, Week 5 confusing and awkward while creating a potential distraction for CBS and a disruption to its apparent plans. Some have speculated about his time in the CBS broadcast booth, with Boomer Esiason saying it’s likely he’ll have to move on, while others like Richard Knobloch wrote on X, I hope CBS puts him back in the broadcast booth.

Fan and Public Reactions Amid Legal Process

Outside of official statements, internet users and fans have weighed in on the situation through social media platforms like X. A user named Celastine reacted with sympathy in a supportive comment writing, Great to hear. Hope he gets some help and comes back. Another user kept the response even shorter in another reply stating, Respect for owning it. Esteban Zamora also said he hoped CBS had not fired Romo and argued that many people drive under the influence without being caught, claiming in a post that “90%” of people have had a DUI at least once, though there is no factual basis for that figure. With the Sept. 21 court date approaching, both Romo’s legal proceedings and his status at CBS remain unresolved.
