President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the United States has reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland for permanent security control and an expanded U.S. military presence on the island. The deal addresses long-standing strategic concerns in the Arctic without transferring sovereignty from Denmark.
Months after threatening to acquire the autonomous Danish territory by military force from the NATO ally, President Donald Trump used social media to proclaim a major diplomatic breakthrough. According to the announcement, the new framework provides permanent control over security, and all other needs on the island.
President Donald Trump Proclaims Permanent Arctic Control
The announcement followed months of intense friction between Washington, Copenhagen, and Nuuk regarding Arctic defense responsibilities. Writing on Truth Social, U.S. President Donald Trump wrote that no U.S. enemies would be able to make sensitive investments on the island without the approval of the United States and that the agreement had no expiry date.
“At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America,” Trump wrote.
Additionally, from now on, no U.S. adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval.
Earlier on Friday, Reuters exclusively reported that the U.S. and Greenland were closing in on a deal for the island that would result in an increased U.S. military presence, but would stop well short of Trump’s long-held dream of acquiring the island for the United States.
Trump in his social media post announcing the deal also stated that the agreement gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns.
He added that with the agreement his administration would immediately begin the process of developing a larger military presence on the mineral-rich Danish territory.

Múte Bourup Egede, Greenland’s foreign affairs minister, said on social media that a deal was “within reach” that would strengthen security for the U.S., Greenland and their allies. It was in January this year that Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and the then-Greenlandic Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Motzfeldt, after a meeting with J.D. Vance and Marco Rubio, announced that the parties had decided to establish a “high-level” working group to find solutions and a shared path forward.
Massive NATO Exercises Precede the Diplomatic Breakthrough
The diplomatic agreement arrives against the backdrop of significant military activity in the region. Ever since U.S. President Donald Trump ratcheted up threats in January to take Greenland by military force, Denmark has maintained a key national security objective: getting NATO to contribute to the defense of Greenland.

A total of 15 countries are participating in NATO exercises in Greenland, compared to seven NATO countries last year, according to an overview prepared by Arctic Command for TV 2. The military branch noted that det er det største antal nationer i nyere tid.

During the peak of the exercises, a total of 800 soldiers are stationed in Greenland—a large number for a country with such limited infrastructure. A total of ten nations are training land operations further south in Narsarsuaq, while Danish soldiers continue exercises in Nuuk. Further north in Kangerlussuaq, Dutch soldiers are training concurrently with a major fighter jet exercise.
Weather permitting, Danish F-35 fighter jets are landing in Greenland for the first time, joining Canadian and American aircraft to practice long-range fighter jet deployments across the Arctic. Over the long term, the plan is for Danish fighter jets to maintain a greater presence in Greenland to periodically deter threats from Russian aircraft, as described in internal defense documents.
Parliamentary Procedures and Next Steps
According to the Statsministeriet, the parties are expected to sign the agreement next week in connection with the United Nations General Assembly. Once the agreement is signed, it will need to go through the necessary parliamentary procedures to enter into force.
